Silver (Best of the Box)
Nirvana

‘Sliver: The Best Of The Box’ features 22 recordings, 18 of which made their debut on the massive selling ‘With The Lights Out’ Nirvana box set, and a mere three songs culled from Courtney Love’s secret stash of rare Kurt Cobain recordings.

The previously unheard tracks are ‘Spank Thru’ (from 1985's ‘Fecal Matter’ demo tape featuring Cobain on guitar and vocals with Dale Crover of The Melvins on bass and drums), a track called ‘Sappy’ from a 1990 studio recording, and a 1991 pre-'Nevermind' rehearsal recording of ‘Come As You Are’.

Track listing

Disc 1:
1. ‘Spank Thru’ - from 1985's 'Fecal Matter' demo tape featuring Kurt Cobain on guitar and vocals with Dale Crover of The Melvins on bass and drums.

Unless there is a secret albums worth of new material on a par with 'You Know Your Right' i dont want to know about any future Nirvana releases.

With you there unit, after forking out my hard earned on the debarkle that was the 'with the lights out' box set, which would have been better titled 'a collection of poorly quality recordings', I have decided that Nirvana have not recorded anything else of worth that I dont already own.

Kurt would be furious.

IMO Butch Vig was a big factor behind Nirvana’s success. He was the main driver behind the polished sounds that came through on the Nevermind album. A sound that Nirvana themselves weren’t that happy with, in fact they sought the more raw and underground sound that you hear on later albums. This Vig influence made Nevermind much more accessible to the greater market.

Out of all the Nirvana recordings I would say that only Nevermind & Unplugged would appeal to you average punter. Bleach, InUtero and Incesticide mostly rode off Nevermind success and I remember being more than a bit disappointed with them at the time they were released. However, they were probably more in line with Cobain’s artistic vision, as is the album mentioned above.

I think Bleach was the truest indication of who Nirvana where trying to be, or the sound they strived to create if you like, it had the raw edge and the absence of the polished finish that cobain detested so much.
