They got back to me and Refunded the membership, but not the box on donation, so had to follow up again.... very cheeky... They did apologise though...

Sorry Nathan! Can’t get anything correct for your account. Apologies for the unnecessary back and forth you have had to endure.

$239 has been refunded (it was on the second page) as there was a $40 debt reduction amount on there.

Everything should FINALLY be in order now. Again, I’m sorry for all the following up you needed to do. Completely our errors which have caused this.

if you bought an AFL silver membership, and selected North, does that actually benefit the club in any way?
The club gets the cost of a basic membership, the AFL keeps the rest.

Surely we haven't just started putting everyone on auto renew without their consent?

I've been on it for years and it is fine for me and my circumstances, but you can't just automatically sign everyone up for this, surely?

Melvin apparently.

And if you spent all day auto-renewing memberships and dealt with the abusive phone calls, you'd be......

'....but that Tassy Home Game, that's 4, what's the Replacement Game going to be...?'

I too, like many on here was a little soured about losing another game . I have decreased my commitment this year but kept the memberships. A bit rude if you ask me, but will live with it for now. Noticed they are having the annual Golf day, assume that there will be 12 holes here in Melbourne and 6 in Hobart to appease everyone .

Correct. For the past 20 or so years I make my annual pilgrimage to Arden st around early March to buy memberships, hopefully see the boys train and buy some useless junk at the RooShop. I've never ever opted in for auto renew and simply pay via the eftpos machine so I really don't understand how my CC details can be used for such a purpose. It's slimey and unethical and just typical of businesses taking customers for granted and raking every dollar off them.

My VISA expired (got a new card) but the Membership was emailing and mailing me to update my expiry date for the new card 2 months ago.

I never had it on Auto Renew, ever, since I took out my first membership in 1993 as an Adult.

Is there any sort of logical explanation for this opt in 'racket'? Is it even legal? Or is the club simply taking advantage of fans goodwill....and gullibility.

We’ll lose hundreds of members because of the extra game in Hobart.

But don’t worry, because we’re guarenteed to win that game and hence make finals and hence win the premiership (just like Hawthorn), and then thousands will sign up. Just wait and see.

(Rolls eyes thingy)

Suppose I could ring Melvin after the 2019 Draw comes out and find out

Simply pathetic by the club sneakily putting membership renewal on auto payment for everyone. I should be the one making this decision not the club. I have never, ever ticked any auto payment box on any membership form in over 35+ years. Greedy bastards. Got better things to do than ring the membership dept to opt out. Expect this type of shit from telco's, banks, dodgy charities etc. Massive fail from the club.

The club told me this when I told them to cancel the auto-renew. I turned it off last year & it was back again for 2019.

"Purchasing your membership online will add you onto the automatic subscription each year"

IIRC there is a little box that is ticked that needs to be unchecked towards the end. Like a subscribe to our newsletter thing.

I always avoided the auto renew as the concept annoyed me but switched a couple of years ago and actually find it much easier than trying to collect the cash myself.

I've definitely never seen this box. I'm 100% against payment autorenewals, if there was a box I would have ticked it (and this happens every bloody year)

It was a pre-ticked box you had to ‘un-tick’ if my memory serves me right.
It may not be there anymore, I think I am about 3 years into auto payments.
I remember almost missing it and getting really pissed off. I used to do what others have suggested and go into the club and pay at the counter, but that isn’t going to work for everyone.

12 in Melbourne, you get a caddy for the first 8 but you have to carry your own bags for the other 4. The club are working on a plan to get a replacement caddy and improve the experience.

There was no tick box. On the contrary the online payment page specifically stated that payment details would be retained and your account auto.debited in future years. There was no opt out box on the printed forms either.

The only way to avoid the Club keeping your details and using automatic debit in future years, was to pay over the phone and INSTRUCT them not to retain your bank details, or, as I did, write in big black ink over the forms “DO NOT RETAIN MY PAYMENT DETAILS.”

I commented on this this time last year in the 2018 Membership thread and an arrogant know-it-all poster denigrated my view that it was unethical. Rudely told me that I was an old codger and should move with the times. As if I am ever going to let a dysfunctional organisation keep my bank account details on record.!

The receipt of such a response grants you automatic entry to the Grumpy Olds thread. Welcome aboard!

So after the 5th text about my expired card today I replied saying no to auto renewal

Within an hour they emailed back saying Auto Renew was taken off

Kudos for the prompt adjustment, but to me it should never have been on the membership because I didn’t request it

Not stoked about the auto renewal, I canned it last year but got put on it again this year. Also had $80 bucks added to my memberships (2) with 2 box on contributions.

Both things done essentially without my consent. I won’t bother to chase up the cash but I’ll still have to follow up on why I was put on auto renew again despite requesting to be taken off it.

I wonder what the stats are on this sort of tactic. Lazy people not thinking anything of it or can't be bothered calling vs. those outraged and cancel everything. I'd think the former wins.

I wonder what the membership department are doing with the 'Spirit of Tassie' bonus they got for increasing the games amount.

Do all other Clubs operate on this default Auto Renew?
I would assume so. A lot of companies do it. Gyms, internet service providers, mobile phone companies...you would be hard pressed to find companies that don't have a rolling subscription listed in their terms and conditions. I've got a friend that took 5 months to realise that he was still paying for his gym membership (he thought it was just a 12-month sub) - makes my eye-twitch thinking about that much wasted money but people forget. People get busy and the day to day gets in the way of things and automated bank withdraws making it even easier for people to forget.
