Sorry to skip back to last nights games, but it sounds like Sharni Layton started well; knocked out a team-mate and gave away a 50 metre penalty for an important goal. Should do her media career more help than harm. Pies are probably loving the extra publicity more than the 4 points.

I work every day with young girls, and have coached a girls footy team at primary school level. That was a very rewarding experience. I think AFLW is fantastic for the community and for football. But unless something can be done about the lack of scoring - 9 goals in two games tonight. No wonder the games were close when 24 is a winning score - then the general negativity about it will continue and be detrimental to it. If NMFC can play an attractive style then regardless of games won then we've added it the competition.

I really want AFLW to work but it just isn't there yet.

None of the teams kicked straight. 12, 9, 9, and 8 scoring shots is a bit under the odds but not as bad as the total scores looked. Our girls only had 11 in their praccy but managed 9.2.

I’d give it more than a couple of games, one of them between an expansion team and the wooden spoon favourite, before getting too concerned.

North Melbourne – Rating rank: 1st (111.8% of league average)

Our mPAV measure had Emma Kearney comfortably the best player last season, and now she’s at North Melbourne, stretching the vertical scale we needed to use to keep these charts consistent. North’s top ten, poached from other clubs, is formidable – Emma Kearney, Emma King, Jasmine Garner, Moana Hope, Brittany Gibson, Jamie Stanton, Tahlia Randall, Jess Duffin and Jenna Bruton. It is particularly strong offensively and supported by a pretty decent looking midfield as well.
The team is a list of two halves, because beyond the top ten they are pretty much entirely draftees and other new recruits pre-listed from the VFLW. As such they should still be as vulnerable as anyone in parts of the ground. The defence in particular looks merely average and some of the other probable top sides, like GWS, may actually prove to have more genuine depth even with less cream at the top.
The other question is how much the level of output of players formerly at different sides, can be replicated in a single side. There are several forward and midfield guns in this group, and they can’t all kick the same goals or hit the same clearances, so it’s quite possible that there will be a form of diminishing returns where several of these players find reduced roles and correspondingly lower individual impact.

Or, perhaps, this is an underestimate and the sum will prove greater than the parts, and North Melbourne will dominate to the extent it leads to the AFL crippling the expansion rules for all teams to follow. It could happen.

Its the AFLs own fault for not giving north a founding position in the game. OF COURSE the muggers want to play together. They don't get paid enough not to want and have that.
