So 'our side' had a 'caveat' attached to it upon being granted entry.

I won't be supporting a watered down version.

I don't care if you support or not.

But that's a key reason why we have the license and the more support the better, especially financially.

Must say I’m not a fan of the Tas government jumping the gun and releasing a statement before the club though.

Again? When did we last have an AFL, VFL and AFLW team based in spanking new headquarters with an expansion and ground development plan for Arden St well progressed?

No-one is bringing me down from the great news this represents for North Melbourne and the women and men who have worked for years to have our women's team ready to go.

And anyone feeling like being a misery guts should have a look at the video taken at Arden st today.

Fantastic post Hearts to hearts.

I missed it earlier but spot on.

Great. Good luck to them.

So you'd prefer no income or womens team purely due to two words missing.

Interesting support when in every other way it's beneficial, with a whole State backing North WAFL team not just a tiny slice of Melb.

For me to support them in their own right, they would need to be called North Melbourne.

Just like the men's team that has been around since the 1800's and I've followed since birth.

Great news for Tasmania. Nothing to do with what most North supporters support.

We have planned and waited for this for a long long time. If we'd tried solely as North Melbourne we would have been 7th in the queue. By 2025 my daughters will be grown up and supporting other women's teams. Glad to hear the AFL is pumping heaps of funds into this North-Tassie team.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I'm not sure why some sad sacks can't just be happy for the club and those who worked so tirelessly to make this happen.
<insert disappointed person shaking from side to side>.

Just get on Board FFS. Maybe when they see the women running around in the blue and white they might change their minds.

Can understand the unrest, but those in charge at the club would not agree to anything in the license if it a) didn't benefit the club or b) if it destabilised the club in any way.

Think I'll wait to hear the complete details before losing my shit.

I agree with this.

Gill confirmed it will be called Tasmania on the ladder.

I won't be supporting it.

It's a 'Tasmanian' team with links to NMFC.

Not the other way round.

Would rather not have a women's side than have one called the tassie kangaroos and wearing a different jumper. That's not really north melbourne is it? Just another state using our name and us selling out. If anything it sends a message to our melbourne fans that we aren't secure and drums up more expansion talk. Can see what the club tried to do, just sold its soul in the process on this one.

I support North Melbourne not Tasmania.... I'll wait for a North Melbourne team before caring about the AFLW comp.

This reeks of a co-location trial for the whole club. Test to see how many North fans are happy to jump on board a Tasmania Kangaroos team.

Tasmanian Kangaroos. Which other club has a different name for their womens team? Happy for all the folk working hard to secure the licence but the name is a sell out.

Is this official?

Cautiously optimistic that an AFL.com.au article refers to us as North Melbourne and makes no inference to a name change, and also notes our ties with Melb Uni.

I refer back to an interview Ben Buckley did on this topic on ABC radio some time ago here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/sport/pr...he-press-room:-round-19/8756902?section=sport
(Interview is at the end of the podcast - from 1:16 or around then.)

Key points mentioned by BB:
  • “In certain circumstances, integrating the Tasmanian identity into the AFLW team is absolutely something we can consider”
  • HOWEVER, it was not part of the pitch to the AFLW - certainly not "to the extent it has been reported"
I'm not sure exactly what this means. But I think it suggests that the "Tasmanian Kangaroos" is a bridge too far for Buckley (along with most BF posters). The "North Melbourne-Tasmanian Kangaroos" AFLW team sounds clumsy and weak, with a foot in both/neither camps - so I'm not sure about this either.

But it is important to note that there has been no confirmed reports of the exact branding of the North Melbourne AFLW side. Just references to the Tassie Kangaroos from C. Wilson and a few other publications, as well as references to North Melbourne in others.

I will watch this space with interest, but I applaud the club without qualification. To win a AFLW license ahead of Richmond and St Kilda (not to mention * and Hawthorn) is extremely satisfying and something I will get behind irrespective of the exact branding. I also have confidence in Buckley and the team to sort out the delicate branding exercise in a way that brings the overwhelming majority of our heartland supporters on-board.

There were just two little words missing back in 07, there was lots of money on offer though....

But why have we had to compromise ourselves, when nobody else had had to?

Yeah the ABC says negotiations are still ongoing but now the license is secured I'd expect it to be hammered out and 100% signed within weeks.
  • Tasmanian government will have a 5 year deal and pay $500k a year to North Melbourne, a tidy profit.
  • Establishment of a Tassie HQ in Hobart (Vic HQ in Arden St) and training facilities in Launceston (probably coming out of the first 500k a year deal + AFL investment in facilities and Auskick & other grass roots development)
  • 4 home games in Tas, 3-4 in Melbourne, 1-2 interstate depending on the fixture for the 2019 season (9 rounds)
  • The team name will be Tasmania Kangaroos. 'Tasmania' will appear on the ladder/scoreboard.
  • The map of Tassie will appear on the guernsey (no green and gold at least)
  • The playing list will aim to be 50% Tassie players within the 5 year deal.
Of course some of this is subject to change.
