AFLW’s two newest clubs and league on a war path over AFL’s list management approach described as ‘dictatorship’

THE AFLW’s two newest clubs and the league are on a war path.

North Melbourne and Geelong are both due to enter the competition in 2019 and were recently asked to submit a wish list of players they would like to target from the existing eight clubs.

The Cats and Roos followed instructions and did so late last week.

Foxfooty.com.au understands the league has since begun reviewing these trade targets and will either approve or deny requests to approach sought after players.

This “dictatorship” approach, as described by a high up source in club-land, has incensed the Cats and Kangaroos, who see it as their right to manage their playing lists however they see fit under the salary cap, which is yet to be set.

The clubs believe the AFL is overreaching in an attempt to balance the talent across all 10 AFLW clubs and therefore diminishing the role of list managers and recruiters in building a winning team.

For example, North Melbourne has all but poached Jess Duffin and key position player Jasmine Garner from Collingwood — much to the Magpies’ frustration.

The same applies to Geelong and its strong desire to lure Melbourne pair Mel Hickey and Lily Mithen to Kardinia Park.

Regardless of whether the duo agree to leave the Demons to become marquee players at the Cats, the league has the power to veto not just trades, but also approaches to players if it feels as if it would give the AFLW competition an imbalance.

Mithen in particular is caught in a rock and a hard place. It’s understood the Cats have told her she can play VFLW for Geelong this season only if she agrees to join the AFLW team for the 2019 season.

The 20-year-old is highly sought after, a required player at the Demons, and will reportedly join Darebin in the interim before making a call on her future once all the building blocks are in place regarding salary caps and payment structures.

This is despite Mithen claiming Geelong’s 2017 best and fairest award.

And while these players and several others are being left in limbo by protracted negotiations and what clubs believe is an domineering hierarchy, AFLW best and fairest and premiership Bulldogs Emma Kearney was allowed to join North Melbourne and begin full-time employment at the club.

An announcement was made, but it remains the only official post-season move that’s occurred.

As one club source put it: “Why and how can one player be permitted to join a new club but everyone else is sworn to secrecy?”

Brett Murphy is leading the charge from the players’ perspective, while Nicole Livingston and Josh Vanderloo are controlling proceedings from the AFL’s side.

In other trade news, Magpies ruck Emma King is understood to also be high on North Melbourne’s wishlist, forward Moana Hope’s future is uncertain, and Darcy Vescio has agreed to stay at Carlton despite a juicy offer from the Kangaroos.

When contacted by foxfooty.com.au, an AFL spokesman confirmed negotiations are continuing regarding a pay deal with the Players’ Association.

A resolution is expected in the next 7-10 days.

Oh, I see, its just like when the AFL men got two new teams and the AFL made sure they didn't get any unfair advantage over existing teams by banning approaches to players.

What a joke. The AFL may as well just throw out the whole notion of lists and teams and just get the players to swap jumpers at half time to even up the results.

Vescio would have been an awesome get.

****** that the AFL is trying to turn this league into the WWE.

The AFL are about there with the men's game, why would this be different?

Looks like we've nabbed Mo Hope, as well as raiding Collingwood further.

MO Hope has almost certainly played her last game with Collingwood with new franchise North Melbourne set to swoop on the 30-year-old forward.

It is understood the Kangaroos have heavily targeted Hope as they prepare to build their list for their maiden AFLW season in 2019.

However, the AFL has the power to veto prospective recruitment moves.

MAGPIES: HOPE, SIEKMAN SPEAK ABOUT FUTURES

Hope was the Magpies’ first marquee signing in July 2016, but struggled to make a big impact in her two seasons at the club.

She is believed to be central to the Kangaroos’ list strategy, and is likely to be playing at Arden Street next year.

The Magpies have made an offer to the forward, who is one of the most high profile players in the AFLW competition, but has yet to hear back about Hope’s intentions.

The news comes as the established clubs receive the list of players lodged by the new AFLW franchise teams North Melbourne and Geelong.

The player movement window opens on Friday with clubs unable to confirm signings or contracts until then.

Hope, who was dropped at one stage by the Magpies this year, kicked 15 goals from her 13 games in black and white.

Hope played VFLW for North Melbourne’s affiliate Melbourne University last season and is close with the Kangaroos star recruit, Emma Kearney.

Collingwood appears the foundation club set to be most effected by the expansion, with talented forward Jasmine Garner also believed to be a target Roos.

Magpies ruck Emma King has also been linked to a move to Arden Street as has Jess Duffin, who is good friends with Kearney through their cricket connection.

Brisbane’s Victorian players have also been targeted, with Ballarat-born speedster Kaitlyn Ashmore also linked to North Melbourne. Ashmore is mates with Hope and also played at Melbourne University.

Great stuff.

A strong start for the Roogirls will help them quickly grow, and being in a growth area, who knows how big they could get.

Mo could join a distinguished group of players including Bourke, Hartung, Power, Calthorpe and Olarenshaw who I've shitbagged all the way from their club of origin to Arden Street.

Yeah, I felt bad after texting my wife to say we'd signed No Hope but end of the day we weren't too enamoured with the last tattooed Magpie of Maori heritage and look how that turned out.

North and Geelong do get the first 37 picks in the draft this year right?

Some big name recruits for the Roogirls, I see they have the same philosophy as the mens side in going after the guns. Seems the link to Melbourne Uni has paid dividends. kaitlyn Ashmore would be another good one from Melbourne Uni/Brisbane.

The whinging has started:

"Would be a massive loss and shows that the incoming clubs have too much sway to recruit players given the inability of existing clubs to sign players on any deal longer than one season."

I don't think collingwood or any other club have the right to complain about AFL-listed MUWFL players joining North. They've had the benefit of what are essentially our players for two years while we've been excluded from participating. It's only fair they get to join North now that we are able to participate.

Yep they got a 2 year leg up in branding and fan engagement before we were able to fire a shot. STFU.

I would like us to get Mo. Whilst I don't watch AFLW enough to know all the players, I think she is one of the few players who just looks like a natural footballer. Unfortunately, she hasn't had the expected impact that her reputation would suggest, but this might be down to fitness - she doesn't seem to be able to engage for a full game.

She looked to be lacking a yard or two in the pace department from what I saw. Good addition anyway.

Shes just really not that good. Dominated against absolute nobody's and got shown up when she had to play against the better girls. Happy to be proven wrong, but wouldn't care if she didn't come.

Jassie Garner is the real get. As fluent a footballer as you'll ever see.

I wouldn't get overly attached to anyone other than Kearney who has strong ties with us since her MU days, they just do 1 year deals and it is going to be the wild west until the AFL gets their number of desired teams as existing clubs will bear a significant chunk of the new lists, so our Academy youth development is going to be extremely important.

The AFL needs to be able to veto player movements because it could leave particular teams gutted if too many bail from too few clubs. They should get on with it though so the club has enough time with the squat together.

We are going to have a huge advantage with our links with both MU and Tasmania.

Shouldn't a well functioning cap mostly sort these issues out - if they get player payments to a reasonable level. Won't make much difference at a few grand per season but if they get it so the TPP's are reasonable I would think that the money will keep players suitably spread. 5k at one vs 6k at another is much of a muchness, but 40k at one and 75k at another starts to make a difference.
