The only negative to come out of tonight is that now I am seriously disappointed that there is no North team, whereas previously I was mostly indifferent.
There may be a need for an intervention at blackshadow manor as mrs blackshadow is threatening to support carlton.

The crowd last night was phenomenal, I got caught in a traffic jam around Princes Park on my way to grab fish and chips last night, what was normally a max ten minute trip took 45 minutes. People really embraced it.

I happened to watch the exhibition match followed by a Vixens netball game close afterwards last year.

it was palpably obvious that the basic athleticism and skills of the netballers was (on average) light years ahead of the footballers. Which is hardly a surprise given netball is the leading elite team ball sport in this country for women. The best tend to end up there.

The point being that what we're seeing in terms of skills is going to go through a massive evolution in a short amount of time. Where tonight Vescio looked a level above, soon enough her skills will look decidedly pedestrian as more and more athletic and talented women grow up playing footballand prefer that sport (and yes I reckon Vescio will up her game at the same time as she is a freak). The downside of course is the talent drain away from netball etc but I guess not everyone can be winners.
Hence, Erin Philips tearing the Giants a new one tonight.

Am i the only one that thought it was rubbish?
I have 2 daughters and for them to be able to see women playing footy on national television is a big tick from me. Not to be condescending but the standard of the game was the equivalent of watching an under 14 game. It will get better though.

I have been an advocate for the AFLW since the start.
Annoyed we didn't get a licence but glad this is happening regardless.
First round was a success. Not all roses though.
I watched about a half of each game.

Crowd numbers - amazing, actually exciting
Access to watch games - good
Kicking - ok
Handballing - ok
Marking - good
Endeavour - really impressive
But the fumbling. The fumbling. This will improve with the players keeping the head over the ball for longer.
Must improve this or it could get frustrating to watch.

For the reasons outlined above, you would think the AFL would appreciate that they have just entered a battle for the hearts and minds and talents of the most co-ordinated and athletic girls and young women, and the enemy is of course, netball. With that in mind, how in hell did the AFL see fit to grant Collingwood an AFLW license when that club is also setting up a netball team in the expanded national competition? That should have ruled them out at the first hurdle.

Ching ching of the register.

Ex Basketball, Netball, Cricket players playing AFL.

What about the women who have played AFL in local comps all their lives.

The 2017 women’s list was obtained through the following paths.
1. Women external to football – 8
2. Women who come from local competitions – 186
Total – 194

46 local clubs supplied 185 players. Three Victorian Clubs (Melb Uni (16), Darebin (15) & Diamond Crk(14)) provided 24% of the total local club intake. Victoria supplied 86 players (44.3%) from 13 Clubs.

The AFL needs to promote the local women's senior & junior comps more if they want to grow women's football.

I was talking to someone about this today. There's (already) a bit of a self-congratulatory whiff about the AFL's media promotion - all this making dreams come true stuff. Those women's footy clubs and a bunch of pioneers already made the dream come true when girls didn't get told they had to stop playing at 13. Just to play was the dream. And plenty of women now over 40 never got it. The AFLW as an elite competition is only going to be an experience and a goal for a small minority - as the AFL is for boys. Growing and sustaining the lower tiers is the key.

Look, good on them and all that, but not at all. It was complete garbage.

They should change the name to Licker Football League, it's basically Orange is the New Black on a football field.

The only real highlight imo was big Sarah Perkins.

Women should stick to Netball and Softball, Lingerie Football or Mud Wrestling - where they're the pinnacle of the sport.

Fully aware though I am that we have differing priorities and values, there wasn't a single part of you that thought even for a second, "what a nice moment for women who've been trying their whole lives to play this game as a professional or even semi-professional job"? I have zero idea what their sexual proclivities have to do with their abilities as footballers either. I thought there were plenty of highlights in amongst some pretty admittedly crap level of football - but then again that's probably to be expected from a league playing in its first ever game, where the players aren't full time and have to hold down jobs as nurses and teachers.

Darcy Vescio dominated. Erin Phillips dominated. Brianna Davey looked like she wouldn't look out of place on an AFL field. Three women got suspended for going the knuckle. They punched each other a lot, especially in the Dogs/Dockers game. They got 50K to four games and had to lock out an entire stadium because there was too much interest. I feel like a lot of importance is being placed on the skill level, when the corresponding game at the same stage of the men's league, AKA the first game ever, was a 49-16 Fitzroy win over Carlton. No team broke 50 points for the entire round. It must've been boring as batshit to watch.

I think the women deserve a bit more credit. I enjoyed watching the games over the weekend for the simple fact that there was enthusiasm, passion and some talent on display from women who've been waiting a long time for the opportunity to do what they did. And also because regardless of gender it was bloody ****ing football on the television and who doesn't enjoy that shit?

Rule of thumb - if North ain't in it I don't give a shit.

How predictable that the AFL's annointed spurters got the last 2 licences despite one of them directly running a team in an another sport competing for the talent and the other showing no historic nurturing of the concept and then both got to kick off the season with their own 'blockbuster'.

The old world order prevailed once again. Even Prince Philip would be impressed at the contrivance of it all.

I'm not sure what values you mean, but I will take the insult lol(i think) in good spirits.

Brother I did say good on them and all that... That was my gold star for trying and participation.

It was free and we are football starved, hence the popularity. Start charging people $20 to get in and crowds will drop 75% (which would still admittedly and unbelievably make it very popular). 4 teams scored less than 2 goals FFS, as for comparing it to 1897, are you able to dig up a pitch report? Ground size? Wasn't the game played on a ground the size of Yarra Park? I really don't know. Anyway I'm not interested in any sport that isn't the pinnacle of the sport... I think local footy is absolute garbage and cringe anytime I hear someone say they are going to local footy over watching North. I think women's tennis is totally unwatchable. I enjoy women's basketball and soccer, well because the Aussies are bloody good.

But Football to me is and always will be about North, without North, it isn't football and I don't give a ****.

PS: How would a seniors (over 35's) league rate? What would the crowds be like? Especially at the start of Feb after no footy in 4+ months.

PPS: I've never asked for anything from anyone in over a decade on here, but can you just delete Saintly's and Popeyes last few idiotic posts and let us get back to the Trump thread?

If North had a women's team would you become more interested?

I'm honestly not sure. The standard would need to increase dramatically, almost like two different games are being played at the moment.

Put it this way....

interest in AFLW if North have team >>>>>>>>>> interest in AFLW if North don't have team

Agree on the last paragraph reminds me of Sydneys lockout laws, because of a few cowboys we are closing all nightlife down.

Great idea that was not.

Really tired of seeing the bolded argument, let's see what the women would have been like without handballing, primitive tactics, 20 people on the field at all times, no push in the back rule and playing with a rugby ball.

There is a point to be made there, but the comparison to the first ever VFL game makes no sense whatsoever.

I've seen a lot of people critical of the lack of goals and say that meant that there was very little entertainment value in the games which I don't quite understand and is a superficial criticism for two reasons.

First of all, I'm not sure about anyone else, but in footy I've never subscribed to the more goals = more entertainment angle. Some of the closest, best and most nerve-wracking games have been low scoring. Sure goals help, but it has never been the most critical part of the entertainment side of the sport for me.

Also, it's important to remember that the AFLW games are approximately half the length of AFL games. They're 15 minutes quarters with no time on apart from when a goal is kicked. Most AFL quarters can last for anywhere between 27-32 minutes. I've seen people complain about the fact that there were only around 8 goals kicked every game, but a simple bit of extrapolation would suggest that in an AFL game that would end up totaling about 18 goals for the match, a number that is not uncommon in AFL games. Across two North-Dogs games last season there were 31 goals kicked which is comparable to the amount of goals kicked in the AFLW games.
