I would have thought the VFL standalone team only enhances our ability to deliver the facilities required. A lot of the same requirements and we could use them twice a weekend and / or on alternating weeks if required.

You don't just click your fingers and a football team appears. The club does not have a bottomless pit of money. Should just focus on getting the VFL team established and then worry about the women's team in a few years time. No need to get ahead of ourselves. Ultimately the men's team is the most important thing and where our focus should lie.

No-one would say it's easy, im just curious as to what figures you're basing your opinion on.

Women are no more likely than men to switch teams from tebine they already support, so a lot d is are off the market - but it will be important for girls playing now as well as unaligned women and men. And your comparison with being left behind from the first generation of VFL clubs is well made.

I think the scariest prospect for many of us with daughters is the chance that they may find an AFLW team to support, ask for some supporter gear for their birthday, and then suddenly you've got a hideous Collingwood jumper hanging on the clothesline. Do you know what that does to the value of real estate?

No I don't know what it does to real estate value. I do know I would miss my daughter if she wanted Collingwood gear, I mean she would have to move out. What other alternative is there?

Waiting and seeing is not always an option, sometimes you need to push to take opportunity when it presents itself. Sometimes opportunity doesn't come around again.

We have a broadly risk averse club. If the bean counters have done the math and are saying go for both, we should go for both. The more teams called North Melbourne the bigger our footprint, the better.

I am all for us pushing for a women's team but it can not have any ties with Tassie.

I think you will be disappointed as we are developing links with Tassie in as many ways as possible: games in Hobart, an academy for young male and female players, and links for a women's team- you will remember that Tassie women played in North Melbourne colours in the curtain raiser to the JLT game at Arden Street. It is already happening. Embrace the reality, don't bury your head in the sand!

Buckley added women’s football was also a key focus for the club, with Tasmania likely to play a part in any North bid for an AFLW team.

“The AFL will decide how many new women’s teams and when those teams are coming in, and we have put up our hand to have one of those teams,” Buckley said.

“We would like to find a way to work with Tasmania to integrate that opportunity into whatever we do.

“As I understand it, the AFL will only be admitting AFL clubs so I’m not sure how it would work or how successful a stand-alone team would be. We are certainly prepared to work with the Tasmanian Government and Tasmanian football to see if we can find a way to partner on women’s football.”

Another way of putting it is: "Thanks for putting in your applications last year. It counts for virtually nothing. You have to reapply along with all the others who didn't, and who we informed that they might as well not bother till 2018 as we've got it all planned out anyway."
