Stoked that we will have a team from 2019.

But from a competition perspective, an additional 4 teams the following year is too much. Will severely drain the talent pool that year and for several years after. Would've been better as 2 x 2 x 2 intake with a two year gap between each.

Overall im happy with the news, but I just don't like the fact we can't get anything without conditions.

The Tassie link worries me a bit.

I don't mind us having strong ties with Tasmania, as long as the AFL and Tasmania respects our limitations, if they do, I am happy for us to play some games there and have a strong relationship with them on and off the field. Victoria is a very competitive market and I think it benefits us to have that link and it is good for the people of Tasmania.

However, if they ever get a team of their own, it will cause issues. Hopefully, by then, we would have significantly strengthened our position here in Melbourne, and have a strong supporter base. We need to emulate the investment and work that we put into Werribee and do it simultaneously with every large growth suburb in the North West region. To do that we need the resources.

I have been pretty supportive of us getting an AFLW side.

If it is the North Melbourne AFLW side I am completely behind it.

If it's not then I see nothing that ties that side to the one I love.

I don't love the Sunbury Kangaroos just because Royal blue and white.

This.

I believe it is possible to be both proud and happy for the club in having achieved something quite sensational in terms of innovation and giving women a place to play football; and being sceptical of the attachment to Tasmania and the underlying implications that naturally arouses in North supporters who are still gunshy about the GC deal.

Neither do I but say the following things line up......

-Hawthorn don't renew their arrangement with Launceston
-Tasmania want those games replaced, Gil has stated he want's only one team, despite our constitution do you think we are not filling that void
-Tassie get's behind the all of North arrangements,
-Time goes on and Tassie says and proves, we want and deserve a full time team
-Media turn up the north to tassie heat
-North rebuff relocation
-AFL fixtures North 4:40 sunday every round of the year.
-AFLs own media turns up relocation heat
-Membership/Crowds diminish
-Player recruitment becomes even harder.

We need to make sure we have a plan to combat this, because the AFL will engineer a relocation if it is their will.

As long as its NMFC with a split arrangement, no issue at all replicating what the mens side is doing. (as much as I would prefer 11 HG in Melbourne)
Agree completely.

In that unlikely case, an AFLW team with no links to Tasmania isn't going to be the saving grace.

You think that is unlikley?

Any further connection to Tassie will strengthen the case.

CEO & Managing Director Carl Dilena: “Our submission focused on participation and player development at a grassroots level." @aflwomens
"(It) involved the state of Tasmania in a meaningful way, while maintaining an equally strong connection to our home in North Melbourne."
"We will finalise exact details of partnership with Tasmanian Government and ensure maximum benefit to both North Melbourne and Tasmania.”

But you can also argue if we get the Arden St redevelopment plans approved and completed.
Then it is going to be unlikely they will be asking North to pack up and leave for Tassie, especially after so much money has been spent on the redevelopment. Plus the great work being done by the Huddle.

Well I think it is great news. Let's worry about the ramifications for the men's team down the track but for the time being, let's all get excited and support the new team and look forward to 2019 when we can watch the mighty NMFC girls strut their stuff.

20 years ago, we had more members than Hawthorn.
Hawthorn's sustained success through 70s until now is part of their transformation since then.
They have a prominent city of Launceston logo on their uniforms and yet no one talks about relocation for them.

The ball remains firmly in our court. If we can muster consistent successful periods and continue to invest in the local community, we will not be at risk of relocation.
Furthermore, steering clear of controversy and having a superstar would also help our brand.

Its why I'm invested in a proper rebuild without shortcuts for not just one dig at it like the Bulldogs, but an era like Hawthorn have been able to do through some smart recruitment (and luck).

Most of the people that jumped on the dogs bandwagon last year have already jumped off. However, if you can convince someone to join your cause for a few years through continued success they will likely stick around for the bad years when they end.

If we do this then what happens with AFLW branding becomes irrelevant.
