AFLW best and fairest Emma Kearney has walked out on the Western Bulldogs to join expansion side North Melbourne.

Kearney, 28, who took out the women’s game’s highest individual honour last week, is understood to have informed the Bulldogs of her intention to leave the Whitten Oval at an exit meeting on Wednesday.

While there remains uncertainty about the exact list and trade rules for the next AFLW season, in which the league grows from eight to 10 teams with the addition of the Kangaroos and Geelong, Kearney is set to join the Roos for their first season in the competition.

Not only will Kearney play for North, she will also take up full-time employment at the club from next week, leaving a job in the coaching team at AFL House.

“We’re rapt that Emma has nominated North and sees her future at Arden Street. We look forward to finalising her move here when the AFL’s rules on player movement are confirmed," North Melbourne football operations manager Laura Kane said.

“We identified Emma very early on as someone we wanted at North Melbourne and she will commence employment here soon, with player terms to be agreed in the coming weeks.”

Kearney will take up the role of sport and recreation coordinator at The Huddle, North Melbourne's not-for-profit community arm.
On top of winning the AFL’s best and fairest,

Kearney also won the Dogs’ best and fairest for the second year running, having played an instrumental role in the club’s premiership success this season.

Kearney is also a talented cricketer, having played for the Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash League. Whether she is able to continue to pursue both sports is somewhat unclear, with uncertainty surrounding the calendar for both women’s cricket and women’s football next summer.

Kearney said after winning the AFLW best and fairest that, if made to choose, she would pick football.
