North Melbourne to make immediate impact in first AFLW season after announcing key signings
GLENN McFARLANE, Herald Sun
May 11, 2018 5:57pm

NORTH Melbourne expects to make an immediate impact in its maiden AFLW season next year following a bumper start to the 10-day signing period.

Having already secured this year’s AFLW best player Emma Kearney, the North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos on Friday announced they had locked in Jasmine Garner, Jamie Stanton, Jess Duffin, Tahlia Randall, Danielle Hardiman, Jenna Bruton and Katherine Gillespie-Jones.

More signings will come in the following days with the prospect that Collingwood’s Mo Hope and Brisbane’s Kaitlyn Ashmore will also be playing at Arden St next year.

The Kangaroos have signed Maddison Smith, a highly-rated Tasmanian, who kicked nine goals for Clarence in her first Tasmanian state league game.

North Melbourne’s AFLW coach, Scott Gowans said he was delighted with the players the club has been able to secure.

“We wanted to go into our first year and have a real impact on the competition and I strongly believe we have built a list that will do exactly that,” Gowans said.

“We were diligent in securing some of the competition’s most elite talent, and we wanted to build a side that could work together and complement each other.”

Fair list you are building with the signings of Duffin and Garner. Disappointed to lose them both.

Does anyone feel well enough informed to rate the players signed so far?

Don’t really know. I’ve been a mildly interested watcher and do sometimes listen to The Outer Sanctum podcast when I have a spot for them in the listening schedule. So I know who the big names are on the whole.

But ...

The Hurling People Now guys did do their Player Approximate Value rankings for this year’s AFLW so there is at least a catch-all number of sorts to rank them. It's at http://www.hpnfooty.com/?page_id=25742 and it looks like:

  • Kearney's year was off the charts at 44.07. If Daisy Pearce is the GAJ of women’s footy, Emma just had a Dusty-2017 season. 12 players had a PAV over 25 this year. By comparison, 14 men’s players had a PAV of 20 or higher in 2017 and Danger and Dusty topped out at about 26. She deadset dominated.
  • 139CD0AC-D4B5-463E-8E65-06C981B92CD7.jpeg
  • Garner is just outside that group. Comfortably a top 20 player. If we’re in the running for King she’s also in the same class.
  • Tahlia Randall is in the next tier of excellent but slightly sub-elite players. PAV thinks she’s a top-40 player, a dangerous mid-fwd. That 21-40 list includes some big names: Erin Philips (big injury discount tho), Mo Hope, Chloe Molloy, Tayla Harris. Jamie Stanton is in the same group but better: 23rd overall and a balanced def/mid who can also get forward.
  • You get to page 3 - top 60 - before Jess Duffin appears. Versatile B+ grader.
  • Hardiman is a little bit the odd one out with a total PAV of 11.3 but her defensive PAV of 9 puts her 13th for that specific component. A bit like the Tazza of AFLW mayhe: excellent KPD who doesn’t need to rack up stats to be valuable.

So to summarize, we’ve gone hard at the elite bracket. If King & Hope also come we'll something like 4-5 of the top 25 players and 6-7 of the top 40.
Excellent summary. Thank you. 4-5 of the Top 25 players is a bloody good start!

Maddison Smith is #10 for Clarence in this one. Looks like a pretty physical type. Also liked the look of Clarence #28 Melanie Wise and Launnie #21 Georgia Hill in 5 minutes of highlights with no sound

Haven’t been able to find the 9 goal game on YT but it looks like it was a pantsing and she didn’t seem to have played vs Glenorchy this year.
