that's the thing with the English batting..any score by lunch is possible !

Cant believe they haven't played a couple more warm up games though. Big chance to capture the ashes. Should have given themselves every chance to get used to the conditions
There is a lot of criticism of that here in England. Rob Key is generally regarded as a lazy halfwit too busy glad-handing to organise anything and McCullum/Stokes both share that macho “just rock up and play” attitude. Hussein, Cook, Atherton and others have all voiced concerns.

It is pretty consistent for all international touring sides not to play many warm up games in the contemporary age.

Any more games and they'd break down, the schedule is pretty full on, 3x B2B Tests.

Most teams are beaten before they go through Customs when they are en route. This England Team has had everything go their way, Australia's best Two bowlers aren't playing. I think it'll be a decent series but the pressure is on England, never will they get a better chance in Oz.

That's for sure
In fact I'd argue England are the more talented side and its not a great Aussie side by a long way.
But as you say they just don't really perform in Australia

The health of England’s bowling attack might determine the series. If Wood (hamstring already troubling) and Archer are mostly fit they are better set up for Aussie pitches than in the Anderson/Broad era. If they are hurt the drop off is significant as Carse, Atkinson are both just as fragile but less accomplished/more erratic. They have no spinners worth mentioning either.

Carse bowled really well in NZ a while back. Looked real class. Hasn't kicked on as much as I thought he would though

My Pommie colleagues think Carse is a bit of a one trick pony trying to hit the pitch hard and short around 145kph every time rather than varying pace, length, seam position etc. NZ is often very helpful conditions for so maybe that disguised this?

Maybe.. but he just didn't give the Kiwi batsmen a sniff all series
Anyway the pommie batsmen didn't have the same problems with our quicks. Brooks smashed us

if he gets it right in Aussie he could be a bit of a handful as he has some tools. Can bat a bit as well

Kiwis have a love affair with England that we don't entertain. If you take out the pre WW2 records, nowhere is their most apt description.

Pretty sure they have only beaten us 5 times in Australia since the War.

Everyone looks ok bowling in NZ, though. It's usually overcast and the pitch does a bit.

NZ and Aussie would be very similar in views re England I would think
we have very similar Histories

Didn't you guys have a referendum on the royals and opted to stay a commonwealth country ?

NZ pitches definitely do a bit first dig but settle down very quickly, lots of big scores in NZ recently.

I didn't want to go here really, but there's a difference between love for the monarchy and love for the country.

I hate their guts but would drink/whatever to all hours and make sure they made it home safe. It's a bit like fighting with your older brother. I think you guys respect them more than we do. We love England the same but you guys wanna be English more than we do (I think haha)

Some of us would have preferred a revolution over a referendum.

I think 30 years ago that might have been the case, but NZ has changed a lot. Been huge immigration here.
A lot less people with English ties now

The Irish thing is complex. My own family has Southern Irish roots through the Liverpool grandparents. Catholics (as I was raised though I chose humanism) & republicans not monarchists. Scots with Irish roots are roughly 2:1 Northern Irish Protestant UK monarchist unionists to Catholic republicans. Some on both sides have the mutual enmity, at least in Glasgow, at almost historic Belfast levels. Not great. For the most part in my experience most ordinary Scots are tired of all the old garbage and do not live up to their dour, penny-pinching stereotypes…maybe they all shipped out to The Cloudy Islands 😉
