to be fair there's not a lot of quicks waiting in the wings for either side that I've seen

Not a lot of batting around either.. Hence why Loose bus change and Hightower keep getting selected for Aussie, plus Weatherall.. and Bethall gets selected without a first class hundred ( he does look to have some talent though..)

the top end talent is getting sucked out of test cricket by the T-20 leagues

I wouldn't be picking Marnus as an opener either if he was ave 31 after 64 tests. That's no good.

I keep hearing that the pommies coulda/woulda/shoulda.....it seems they're caught up in their own sense of grandeur. They're just not a good team.

There's still runs in this pitch, and it looks like the English have finally decided that their all out attack plan is best placed on the back-burner. Duckett actually looks solid when he isn't winging his bat at everything his short arms can reach, and this Bethell kid has some skill (and a lot more poise than Pope; good selection).

The up and down has started, so hopefully after lunch some wickets fall and this is wrapped up before tomorrow when I'm back in the office.

It will be interesting to see how the day unfolds. Not having picked a specialist spinner, my sense is there's a reluctance to ask (for example) Webster to bowl his offies as it's an admission that not having a frontline option was a mistake. Webster over Green to make way for Murphy might have seen more spin bowled
