Curious about the BBL as I pay scant attention to it…..

Do people actually follow a franchise, or is it more a way to be entertained for an evening?
I watch the Hurricanes games, when I remember they're on and have since I lived in NSW.

Don't really care tho. The only team I care about is North or local clubs I've played sport with.

So I was a Renegades fan, haven't seen a single ball bowled in the BBL this season.

I just checked the table, and wasn't surprised, I think the Renegades need to be burnt and start again.

Or **** them off to Geelong, that could be the Geelong Gatorades . And we get a new side.

Why are they so shit house

Another Gades/North combo

The Stars have done well to keep a few recognisable blokes anchored in the side which helps people follow them I think.

Maxy and Stoinis as long time players helps make them feel like a real side. Transferring Siddle across has also helped. Even Rauf was their discovery and they've retained him.

The Renegades have chewed through players since Aaron Finch and just by our luck have traded out Sammy Harper who has gone on the have a ripping year.

At least they’ve won a flag unlike the Stars

It is usually the quality of the depth that determines the winner in the BBL. The Sixers have access to the better NSW players, the Scorchers have the entire WA squad, the Stars have most of the Victorian first class squad, etc.

I dont follow any franchise cricket. Its always been rather meaningless to me, just like fast take away food. One game just merges into another without remembering much about it or who plays for which team.

TBH I dont mind it. Its been far better since they cut back the number of games and the kids seem to enjoy it.
Worst things to do than have a beer and watch an hour of it. Cant say I watch all 3 hours or so

personally I think they could make a really good comp by having 1 team only for Perth, Hobart, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, plus bring in a North Island and a South Island team from NZ. Get some good trans tasman rivalry, get an additional 5 million people market , plus maximise the rivalry between the Aussie cities

but hey just a suggestion. Its your comp !

They're a mess. Aside from Gayle, whatever international players they've brought in have been garbage - Murali, de Kock, Rizwan. OMG Rizwan. Biggest thief since Ronnie Biggs. In 15 years they've not had an established Australian Test player come back and play. Wade, Maxwell, Boyce, Christian, Maddinson, Siddle, Harvey - all decent BBL players who were better after they left the Renegades. Zampa worse after he arrived.

It's no coincidence that they played 40% of their games in Geelong this year. Or that they got the Adelaide Oval curators over to get that pitch up to standard. There is a genuine push for them to represent regional Victoria and base themselves in Geelong. Watch this space.

There’s a huge amount of cricket snobbery around the BBL. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. If you do watch it, accept what it is and stop complaining about what it isn’t.

Cricket is on television every night through January and good numbers roll through the turnstiles. Broadcasters aren’t handing over serious money for a meaningless 50-over series between Australia and whoever the hell has the time or inclination to come out here. The BBL attracts sponsorship and merchandising dollars from young fans, creates a professional pathway for players who are never going to be international quality, and if it didn’t exist the best Australian players would simply piss off overseas to play it elsewhere. The money Cricket Australia makes flows back into the system to attract and retain junior players.

If you love Test cricket, you have to accept the paradox. The BBL doesn’t make Test cricket better - not even remotely - but the money it generates makes Test cricket possible.

Sure, I’d love January to be the old World Series Cup again. Australia playing the West Indies and some other sucker in a proper tri-series. Tuesday night at the SCG, Thursday night at the MCG. Saturday the two non-Australian sides in Brisbane, Adelaide or Perth, and Australia fronting up the next day over a Sunday roast. Richie Benaud calmly prognosticating over the points table, as if working out the worst of the three teams was some great mathematical enigma.

I’d also love being 13 again.
