NMFC Board Elections

I get the feel that most of these conversations are farmed out to telemarketing companies where you get asked formulaic questions by some dildo posing as a NMFC fan.

Yes the low cost easy approach.
I only raise the question.

If there's little in the way of stated goals, then it's reasonable to investigate possible agendas.

Who's idea was the 250 word limit anyway?! Is that all they think the members can digest?

I was informed of that by the independent nominations committee aka “culling crew”.

Im a fairly considered individual, so I don’t like to make statements until I understand the club environment. My agenda however is simple....represent, listen to and act for members and supporters. And ensure clear and open communication whilst achieving growth and success.

Now you're talking.

If they do then you can be certain that we will never see them, as I strongly assume it would be critical of the club (board).

The members are ultimately to blame for allowing this secretive and self serving scenario to arise.
As a whole, you can't really argue with that.

I've never really got my head around why people don't vote when they fought for the right.

Having said that, the engineering of the boys club since 2007 was shrewdly achieved and I personally felt duped by the suits running the show who successfully chipped away in a myriad of ways that effectively reduced the rusted on's to little more than cashed up cattle.

I am pretty ignorant about this kind of stuff but is it necessary to have Buckley on the board of directors when he is already entrenched as the CEO (or whatever his title is)?

As Paul mentioned if the constitution allows up to 12 directors why stick with only 3 if all 4 have something to offer? I assume it’s not a paid position, or is it?

Not that I’m aware. I wouldn’t want to be paid anyway.

Taking this seriously for one moment, Buckley should be retained and you would assume that Arch will get up on popularity alone, so I agree with your opinion.

I can't see what point of difference the other two candidates bring to the table. As I have stated, I suspect Sonia is only there to facilitate her feminist & social agendas, as well as padding out her CV, and If Frank's account here is to be believed, then he claims to want to seek a position to find out what is going on in the first place in order to formulate his position. But where do we go from there? Will Frank just be another "yes" man? Is this just a CV padding exercise? No one appears to have any stated agendas.

I can't see any point of difference between the 4 candidates. They all love the Club and want what's best for it. Yes, Buckley and Arch are certainties.
The question for members is who of the remaining two. Strong criticism of the Club on this forum and others is that the Club is run by a "boys club" i.e internal selections. Here we have a choice between two candidates Paul and Sonya, one new one heavily associated with the inner sanctum.

Sonya
“In 2007 I worked with other North people to keep the club based at Arden St.” What did she actually do, remembering that the Club was pushing for the Gold Coast. I’m not saying she didn’t but I’d like specifics.

“From 2011-2015 I was NMFC’s General Manager of Community Engagement, helping to establish The Huddle as one of the best community programs in the country, and ensuring that the club’s community and fan development programs were based where they should be – at Arden St.”
I fully support the Club in its Huddle initiative and acknowledge Sonya’s work there. I’m not concerned as to where the “club’s community and fan development programs were based” but more where they were actually targeted.

“I also developed expansion strategies for those programs throughout Melbourne’s growth corridors and into Tasmania.” Again, what were these strategies AND were they successful?

“I’m honoured to have been approached by Ben Buckley to join his board,”.
This is my real concern.

Will Paul, if elected, get swallowed up OR ostracised (Ron Joseph) - I don't know but I am willing to take the risk.

One influential NM member said to me....”Buckley and Archer will get votes anyway, so if people want a representative on the Board and lead change they should only make 1 vote for Paul.” Why? Because it’s 1st past the post and to lead change members need to differentiate and make voting for only one candidate count.

My reply:

After over 20 years as a Director in business and government I have developed numerous relationships across the areas you have mentioned. Some will be new whilst others will explore “new angles”. Boards and organisations need to review and revisit as well as explore new opportunities.

Numerous relationships with who? What can you leverage for us ?

You said you have local government expertise.

Biggest issue, as others have mentioned is increasing the Arden st footprint. What is your relationship with the VPA and with the state government? The precinct structure plan draft is about to be approved, we need Board members who can get our club to have a say during the consultation phase and get ourselves a seat at the table, twist the arms of government and the VPA to get Arden st increased. Without that, Arden st is destined to be turned into a community leisure facility and not a high performance centre for elite athletes.

Candidate Statement – Paul Crapper
As a continuous member for 37 years of the North Melbourne Football Club (since 1983), inaugural North Melbourne AFLW member and a highly qualified and experienced Director and Corporate Services Executive, I wish to nominate to become a Director of the North Melbourne Football Club. My strategic and operational skills and experience developed over 30years, that I would bring to the Board include: financial management, marketing & communications, people & culture, risk management, technology, Board governance, business development & sales, planning & building control and leadership of diversity and inclusion committees across the private and public sectors. In addition, over 30years in business and government has seen me develop strong relationships across Federal, State and Local Government, the private sector and the Victorian community. As an experienced Board member and Chair of Finance Audit and Risk Committees, I have previously served on numerous Boards over the last 20 years including Common Fate Ltd (Indigenous reconciliation), SCOPE Business Enterprises (health & disability sector), Unison Housing Ltd (homelessness), Arthritis Victoria (health) and the Dame Nellie Melba Opera Trust (the arts). I am also a White Ribbon Ambassador in Australia. My interest to join the Board is to be representative of the "rank and file" North Melbourne Football Club member, whilst bringing additional skills, experience and relationships to our club.

What is your experience with technology Paul?

You’ve listed this as an expert area but then you’re telling us here this is your first time you’ve ever used social media, apart from LinkedIn.

I draw your attention to my experience in local government planning and building control referenced on my LinkedIn site. Also Federal, State, Local and private sector relationships. One can get a lot done when leveraging existing relationships.

I avoid social media because of the abuse and the keyboard warriors who hide behind avatars. I’m currently leading a major ICT business transformation in government.

Paul

I congratulate you on progressing from the noms committee.

However, the consistent message from the respective directors (Buckley, Archer, Hood) has been encouraging and I will not vote against them.

Good luck for future elections though.

Suggest you all read the Herald Sun article of 15 May 2019 related to NMFC member James Wangmann’s efforts to represent members last year.

I have never met Paul but did link with him through LinkedIn so am very confident he is who he says he is. Found him there and invited him onto BF - pleased he did. Also warned him that some on here will take pleasure in trying to deride him. I think he will be the only candidate with the guts to come on here and engage.

I think he is the only candidate (non board invited) that didn’t have to have a candidate culling interview so clearly the board folk think he is suitably experienced to be there.

You mentioned your media experience? Can you expound on that?

Also, what your relations with CoM like, especially on community stuff?
