NMFC Board Elections

I would have voted for him this time round if he could answer a straight question and wasn't rude to me lol.

I'm not entirely sure why we need Arch on the board being completely honest.

You know, you could see Paul's engagement here as a positive. Despite what I interpret as rude behaviour on the part of some, including yourself, he's returned and kept responding to questions. You may not like the responses, but quite frankly, they're the sort of responses I'd expect of a Board candidate. He's been direct, without indulging your muck-raking. Your negative campaign, as you acknowledge, seems driven by personal humbrage at "R". Maybe time to let that one go SLF? (Weren't you leaving this thread? ;) )

In the interests of fairness, if we're citing the judgement capacity of individual candidates, let's not forget...

Former North Melbourne star Glenn Archer has labelled the court process "crazy" after an outburst in court where he was convicted and fined for punching a volunteer runner at a junior football game in Melbourne's north-east.

The 44-year-old has also been ordered to pay for the man's broken glasses after pleading guilty to assault over the incident at an under-15s football match his son was playing in at the Heidelberg Football Ground in June.

The Heidelberg Magistrates Court was told Archer had earlier run onto the field and had an argument with an umpire who was trying to break up a fight between the former AFL player's son and another player.

The runner was later telling Archer he was not allowed onto the field during a game when he punched the volunteer official in the face, breaking his glasses, the court heard.

Archer's lawyer Andrew Harris told the court his client should escape any penalty except paying $955 to replace his victim's glasses.

Mr Harris said Archer was aware he was looked up to by members of the public, had apologised through the media and "learnt his lesson". "All that's occurred is some glasses have been broken," he said.

But in convicting and fining Archer $2,000, Magistrate Cathy Lamble said surely he understood a greater penalty was appropriate. "It is such a bad example for young people playing sport, it's such a bad example to other parents," she told the court.

Her ruling prompted an outburst from Archer who stood and asked the magistrate if he could defend himself. "You haven't heard the full story," he told Magistrate Lamble. "Are we allowed to appeal this?" Archer's lawyer told him to sit down as Magistrate Lamble told the court her decision had been made.

Former AFL star Glenn Archer has been cleared on appeal of an assault conviction nearly two years after hitting a volunteer runner in the face at a junior football game

Judge Mark Dean re-sentenced Archer to a 12-month good behaviour bond without conviction and ordered him to pay $2000 to the Berry Street children’s charity. He said Archer’s assault was a “serious” incident given it occurred at a children’s sporting game.

“The action performed by Mr Archer is at the lower end of the scale but it is the context which needs to be considered,” Judge Dean said. “Behaviour of this type at sporting events and social gatherings is all too prevalent in our society. It is an ugly side of our society and it has no place in the way we conduct ourselves.” However, the judge said Archer had been “arguably provoked” by the victim, who had been pointing at Archer’s face.

Archer had been watching his son Jackson play in the Under 15s for Park Orchards when a scuffle broke out between two players.

No, my issue with him came well before that.

It seemed to become a little more 'intense' though. I have no problem with you raising possible concerns or issues, but there's no need for the aggression. Let the facts, or people's intepretation of them, be what they will.

The guy is putting himself forward to represent the people as an independent candidate for a club he's equally passionate about. He's not leading a ticket to assume control. He says his role would be to be a member advocate and to be 'disruptive' force. In principle, I like the 'keep the bastards honest' role, though, of course, that applies to himself too. Anyway, I applaud his equanimity in responding the way he has.

I'm personally not convinced Arch is really a suitable Board member. Did he have to pass the candidate test? I imagine he's the least qualified of the lot. Besides, he did his best work in the period when he was off the Board. ;) Why resign and come back within a matter of months? What's that about?

Regarding Tef's view that Sonja is 'cv padding', as a supporter, if I was a member of a few Boards, I wouldn't see being on the NMFC Board as 'cv padding'. Rather, it would be the pinnacle of that part of my career. Being able to offer relevant skills to the club I support would be the cherry on top.

So how independent is he if PdR is backing him? Not that I have a problem with that.

Although ... Stable admin is important if we want to be successful on field imo.

I assume someone is or some are supporting every candidate. Nobody stands alone from what I would understand. I'm sure Paul is his own man, like the others, would be their own selves.

So everyone is independent?

I think we are arguing semantics. I have not criticised any nominee here based on who is supporting them. I suppose Arch, Sonya and Ben are a ticket. Paul is an independent running without a ticket. Again, semantics. Good luck to all four.

Fair enough.

Right now Paul Crapper has probably picked the worst time to run in years. It's the most satisfied I've been with admin for a while. If he doesn't make it and hangs around for a year (not necessarily here but in the eyes of the club and supporters) pushing members' interests it'd certainly be a feather in his cap.

If he doesn't get up I wonder if his nomination would get through the vetting next year. Would 'you had a chance' be enough to blackball his nom?

If he was genuinely engaging with members and maybe building some sort of relationship with the board then I'd hope not.

If he wasn't then he probably wouldn't get thru vetting and probably wouldn't deserve it anyway.

How long are the terms for? I know the nominees up for election are rotated. Assuming Paul wins and they want to get rid of him how long would it take?
No offence Paul, just interested.

3 years until they have to stand again if they want. Max 3 terms.

Thread was flagging, shadows getting longer and the momentum getting away from us.

Out of nowhere Kimbo steps up, breaks a few tackles and gets it back on track. Nice work.

Paul Crapper - can you outline the nature of your relationship with Peter De Rauch?

Peter de Rauch: Shinboner spirit is back at North Melbourne
Michael Warner, Herald Sun
February 11, 2020 8:00am

Long-time North Melbourne powerbroker Peter de Rauch says the Shinboner spirit has returned to Arden St “after a 12-year hiatus”.
De Rauch, a fierce critic of the club’s direction under former chairman James Brayshaw, said a cleanout of the Kangaroos’ senior football and administrative positions had been transformative.

“You could feel the passion in the room again,” de Rauch said of last week’s season launch attended by club greats including Wayne Carey, Wayne Schimmelbusch and Anthony Stevens.
“Everyone associated with the club is now convinced we have a club that can and will succeed.

“North needs all members who have felt disenfranchised by the club to return and be part of the rebuild.”
The Kangaroos enter season 2020 with a new coach (Rhyce Shaw), new chief executive (Ben Amarfio) and new football boss (Brady Rawlings), while Glenn Archer, a dual premiership player and key driver behind many of the off-field changes, returned to the Ben Buckley-led board as a casual appointment in December.

Archer and Buckley are seeking re-election at this month’s annual general meeting along with another casual board selection, Dr Sonja Hood, and independent candidate Paul Crapper.

De Rauch said the club’s decision to allow Crapper to nominate was another significant sign.

“The reason the former North Melbourne shareholders gave up their shares was to return the club’s ownership to the members and by doing so, the members had the opportunity to have a say in its direction,” de Rauch said.

“Now at last an independent candidate has been allowed to nominate. He is a lifetime member of our club and highly experienced as a board member with numerous government contacts.”

De Rauch surrendered more than $1 million of club shares to North Melbourne in 2007 and served on the board for almost two decades.

Jack Ziebell will skipper the Roos again this season, backed by vice-captains Shaun Higgins and Robbie Tarrant.

The Roos’ AGM will be held at Arden St on February 26
