Give the players a private vote. And then count it in private, if they make a boneheaded decision then intervene like they did with the Syd Barker >_>

There’s a book called The Captain Class that analyses the most dominant 20 or so sports teams in history. The author’s conclusion is that they all had skippers who weren’t the best players on the team, were generally defenders and had the following traits:

#1 – Extreme doggedness and focus in competition.
#2 – Aggressive play that tests the limits of the rules.
#3 – A willingness to do thankless jobs in the shadows.
#4 – A low-key, practical, and democratic communication style.
#5 – Motivates others with passionate nonverbal displays.
#6 – Strong convictions and the courage to stand apart.
#7 – Ironclad emotional control.

I guess #3 counts Simpkin out!

Who does that leave us with?? X??

Too often we've picked average to below average impact players as Captain.

A conga line of them.

Only Carey and Harvey have bucked that trend in nearly 35 years.

The Captain does not need to be your best player but they should be close.

Young players need a strong, no nonsense team first presence around them.

That's X.

He's proven he's in our best players.

Simpson and Swallow were 10 times the Captain that Boomer was.

I've played a fair bit of Ultimate Frisby in my time & we choose our captain via an anonymous ballot. I got busted one year when I received all the votes, so the other guys knew I'd voted for myself. I was the obvious choice. I just had that bit of a swagger about me.
However, that caused a fair bit of friction amongst the group, particularly with my mates Mr Bubbles and Mini Banch. I had had enough that season so I decided to put my cube in the rack. Bubbles & Banchy didn't like it, and so one night they tried to give me a Code Red. But as soon as they entered my room, I began lip-singing Madonna's La Isla Bonita in my brand new white Adidas Three Stripes tracksuit. They soon got it.

Was this the teams in history with 4 peat’s premierships?

Sort of. It’s based on 16 teams that have been significantly more successful than the next best.

Collingwood’s 4 peat in the 20s (Syd Coventry) and the Hockeyroos from the mid-90s to early 2000s (Rechelle Hawkes) are the two Aussie teams that made the cut.

Sure and absolutely, but when was the last time a captain of ours walked out on the club?

And there’s your answer,
But we haven't had a captain walk out on the club.

Repurposing this thread as general captain discussion.

Things get really interesting now.

If Jy goes, it let's us shift around the leadership in a way we probably couldn't have if nothing had blown up.

We may have well liked to change it but it's not that simple to just take it off the 26yo incumbent. Though Clarkson v2010 had no trouble with this kind of cold decision and that was with a premiership captain.

If Jy stays, it's extra complicated. The new captain doesn't just have to take on the role - he'll have to lead a deposed leader too. That's going to require a pretty strong character.

I think its a great time for a shift.

Swallow and Ziebell led the club through some competitive times, both quality leaders through and through - if we'd snatched a flag under either they would be lauded.

LMac and Simpkin took over and got us through one of the most rotten periods we've had as a club, and beyond JHF we've managed to hang on to who we wanted to.

We've turned a corner now, and its time for Sheez, X and Larkey to lead the club, and hopefully foster some leadership from below in guys like Curtis Kerch and FoS. The captain(s) have a role to play, and its an important one, but all these lads need to take ownership and responsibility for the club, we have to fight a different kind of fight as the smallest Victorian club.
