I can very confidently inform you that I'm tougher than John Burns.

Scwatta is a definite candidate. I'll slot him in for now. :thumbsu:

Again, it's about hard nuts, those who were happy to dish it out or take on pain, as compared to courage, which relates to copping it without thinking of the consequences.

Shwatta definitely gave it and copped it.

Stephen Hickey early 80s looked tough

He did go hard, but he wouldn't replace anyone in my backline.

How about Gary Cowton? ( or was he just crazy?)

Cowton was actually a hippie. He got the "crazy horse" handle because of his clumsy looking blind turning action and his "alternative" nature.

That full back line would take some beating, well.. actually they'd probably give one to any forward silly enough to try. Arch fits in comfortably there with the two old boys.
For some reason two names that first sprang to mind were Laurie Icke and Stephen Hickey. Pike and Pickett would be worth a jumper but who do they squeeze out?

Steve Hickey was the first player that came to mind was a big unit
John Law could replace Scotty Thompson imo
Was gonna say Johnny Law too. He and Ross Smith never took a backward step.

Allan Carr is a name many won't register.

He played as a battling ruckman for North between 1959 and 1966 registering 66 games.

He belted a Collingwood player in 1961 when North rolled them by 3 points at Arden Street and received 2 weeks, and did his block proper against Melbourne in 1965 when he belted two Melbourne players and recieved a combined total of 10 weeks suspension.

His crowning glory for "hard nut" legendary status was when he retired from North/VFL and went on to captain coach Frankston in the VFA in 1968 and sustained an eye injury resulting in 50% loss of vision, then played the next week against Box Hill, belted more blokes & copped 4 weeks suspension, and further aggravated the eye to the point where had to go to the eye and ear hospital to have the thing removed!!!!

After having the eye removed he then turned around and informed the Frankston administration that he should be right to return and play again!!!!

Alan Carr..........take a bow.......you ARE an official hard nut!

Byron on wing, but no-one is getting past that backline.
I'll give you Carr Snake
Aylett got battered from pillar to post weekly, got up and kept playing.
Arnie liked a stoush and dished it out.
Teaser played with a #skull. Enough said.

Sure l've left some out. Never saw Kelly, Lewis, Jarrad or lcke play but the legend lives on.

I can't have Burns or Phil K in that side (I am truly puzzled by Burns), but the others are all worthy mate. :thumbsu:

Peter Chisnall could hold them up well. Last I heard he was still doing boxing lessons with the boys at Beechworth Prison at 65 years of age!!!

Mick was tough, but Jock McCorkell gets my vote. He was well & truly shinboner material.

"The tough-man story of all must be North Melbourne’s Jock McCorkell playing with a broken ankle. His trainers claim they tried to get him off the field and his boot was full of blood. ‘Just tie the boot tighter so it won’t fall out,’ Jock ordered and went on with the game." - Jack Dyer 1965.

Yes, Peter Chisnall was on my list. John Cassin probably worth consideration. I remember Allan Carr and that incident in the VFA.
