Apart from Drew Banfield most No 1's have been ordinary..Josh Fraser will take time to mature but I dont see him being a sensation and you already have Collingwood chasing another established ruckman...
Des Headland looks like he would rather be back in WA and destined to be another No 1 who didnt reach superstar status. Then you have the added problem of picking from interstate..would Hasleby have gone to Collingwood and if so how long would it have been before he wanted to go back.
Whats the betting StKilda dont get much joy from the No1 pick this year?

Don't say that Barney!

At least we have the first two picks this year which will help.

Apparently this years draft is not as strong as in previous years, perhaps with a depth of about 40 - 50 good players rather than 70 - 80 in other years.

This may be cancelled out because of the fact that team lists will be reduced from 42 to 38 at the end of the year. Thus, a team like St Kilda who need to rebuild will have to delist something like 12 players to get 7 or 8 selections.

However, as long as there is a lot of good quality talent at the beginning, I will be happy.

From all reports, some of the better players available are Justin Koschitsche (Murray Bushrangers/NSW), Nick Riewoldt (Southport/Queensland) McDougall (Perth)

If anyone knows anything about any of these players or other top prospects, can you let me know. Looking to the future keeps us saints supporters sane.

You can't see Josh Fraser being a snesation? He party already is, his season included scoring a Norwich Rising Star and will continue to, as you put it, mature. This kid will the awesome, his agility for a ruckman is awesome. It's probably a good idea to keep your words to yourself for a while yet. You are forgetting that this was his first season in the AFL, and he has done well for his first year. While I admit he has been beaten on most occasions this year, he will continue to develop into a top ruckman.

Im with you Joel. While im not sure his actual 'rucking' will ever be outstanding, his following ability will be like Peter Moore/Jimmy Stynes with his around the ground marking kicking hanballing skills.

The problem with number one picks is that usually they go to struggling clubs, and arnt given time to develop. They are thrown straight in too early.

Sheedy is a master of keeping youngsters in cotton wool, and when they are ready, then throw them in. The Johnsons this season are a great example. It makes them hungry, and keeps them working hard. McVeigh for example this year has struggled to get a game, when Essendon think he is truly ready, then they will bring him in.

It is a luxury good teams have, and in a way poorer teams need to play these players. For example, I dont think Haselby would have recieved the game time at Essendon that he got at Freo this year - which is a major reason I think Rama should get the rising star award, he has slotted in as a fantastic player in arguably one of the best teams in recent memory - Haselby has slotted in as a fantastic player in a struggling team.

McDougall goes to my school (He's one year older) and from what ive seen he is going to be really good...probably a ruckman. There is also a guy in my yr who next year will be pretty good, played state footy.

NO WAY MAN!!!! HASLEBY DEFINTELY DESERVES THE NORWICH!HE IS A CHAMP! HE HAS BEEN THE MOST VALUABLE ROOKIE THIS SEASON...HE HAS BEEN THE BEST ROOKIE THIS SEASON! OF COURSE HE SHOULD GET THE NORWICH THIS SEASON!

I think that Ramanauskus deserves the Norwich more then Hasleby. The only reason that Hasleby stands out so much is because he is in a struggling team. How many big name players has he played against this season? I think Ramanauskus should get it, because he is a star at Essendon, shown by his ability to hold his spot in a side that has so much depth. He truly is a champion and has played wonderfully this season and totally deserves to get it.

Mmmmm, but there's another post about that.

On topic, I thought we traded our way into picking Michael Gardiner at No 1 in ~1997. Is that right? He's showed a lot the last two seasons, and should end up a mighty fine player.

I still marvel that Banners was the first No. 1 to play 150 games. Amazing stat.

Joel,Fraser will be ok but my point is that he is a still a bit away from being a dominant ruckman every week and Malthouse must think the same else he wouldnt be chasing Porter or Rehn...like what have Collingwood got to trade apart from a early draft pick which they will have to use to buy Fraser Gherig...maybe.

You are right Eagle Fan. Michael Gardiner was a number one draft pick and we traded to get him. He will prolly be the second number 1 to play over 150 games, and then the Eagles would have had both of them! :)
Just for the record, wasn't Travis Johnstone from Melbourne a Number 1 a few years ago, he has developed into a real good player as well.

I have only seen Headland play a handful of games, but from what i've seen, he has the ability to be a brilliant goal-sneaking forward. He is a brilliant mark for his size (183 cm) and has good ground sense.
I've been watching this game for about 40 years, and he is a very good young footballer, who has not been given the oppurtunity he deserves.
I reckon it would be in Brisbane's best interests to use him in their team on a regular basis because he is the type of player who can only make a team better.

Incredibly high endurance marking CHF with great leadership skills. Personally I think the No 1 pick is a valuable commodity.

Don't think Riewoldt will be any good. Go for McDougall.

No way. Spriggs should win it. He's like jimmy krakouer with a surfers attitude. Will go a long way in this comp. see him leading our future premiership side in 7 years time.
