Should be “Tough fought game where the boys dig deep, give 110%, stick to the structures and play the way we want to play” instead. Rolls off the tongue

Needs more reference to “plays role”

The line

They know how to play the game”

Have never understood why it’s not changed to

We know how to play the game”

Surely it’s we?

Different versions are sung with ‘we’ and ‘they’. Pretty sure players sing ‘we’.

I’ve always wondered about the “see the barrackers are shouting” but, shouldn’t that be “hear”?

All correct.

I guess you can see barrackets are shouting though you should be hearing it.

Players do sing we, so do I actually when possible.

I've always thought it was 'see the barrackers a'shouting'. Not 'are shouting'. Think we've had a thread on this before?

'Barrackers a'shouting' meaning 'see them shouting'.

Whatever - I've confused myself now.

I'd prefer we drop the reference to cakewalk. Not ready to mount a campaign about it, and some dont know what it means. But its from a less perspicacious era and maybe its time has come.

“See the Bombers fly up to win the Premiership flag”

“We’re the team that never lets you down”

“North Melbourne will be premiers, just you wait and see”

“We’ll never stop, till the flag is ours for the taking”

Relax.

"We are Geelong, the greatest team of all"

We certainly aren't on our own here.

Take a chill pill people, unlike the expansion teams and the Carlton's of this world we have always been a tight knit and community based club.

We have never sought popularity or even acceptance.

Constancy and loyalty are the clubs bywords, from our workingman's birthright comes the ability to ignore the knockers and bandwaggoners.

Remember the club's history and check out our power year statistics.

Yes the 'Oh the premiership's a cakewalk for the good old Collingwood' is boisterous and supremely confident . . .

BUT . . . .

From the 20's to the late 50's that was quite literally the way it was.

GO PIES!!

Been done before in the 80's and in coincided with one of our most unsuccessful periods in history.

The original lyrics were brought back before 1990 and we broke the drought.

If we manage to win this week, we are the undisputed most successful club in VFL/AFL history. Equal most flags, most Wins overall, most seasons finishing top.

What's there to change?

Its only a song Dansa. I love to sing it after a victory. But it is after all only a song. I'm not sentimental about these things. And I dont see what the song has to do with us being successful. Some clubs with crappy songs have been successful too. We have changed our magpie emblem over the years, and our jumper. Why not one word in the song?

Saying that, I dont feel strongly either way, and I look forward to singing it at the G at about 5.00 on Saturday.

As you say the song has nothing to do with us being successful or unsuccessful ... So why would we change it? I thought the OP was hinting that it is somehow the line in the song was tempting a jinx?

I don't think it's the best song of all the clubs, but it is our song.

Don't we want to sing the same song that players and supporters have sung after every win since 1906!

I didn’t pick up the jinx connection in the OP. And I don’t believe in jinxes. Also happy with the song being arrogant - as long as we deliver. And we have - mostly.

It’s more the historical connotations of the word.

But again, not massive for me. I’ll sing it as loudly as any on Saturday afternoon - I hope!

It is, it's just that they singers got the lyrics wrong when they recorded the old songs years ago.

Maybe that's what happened.

Let's hope we hear it with gusto tomorrow afternoon.

Whilst it has been considered a curse in the past it's worth keeping in the song as when you get the chance to sing it with absolute joy straight after a grand final win it becomes the past part of the song.
