Not a north fan... but I don't think it is true.

Although their midfield seemed to produce enough drive (Harvey, Bell and Simpson especially), they did lack a focal point.

But Hawthorn played well... Carey is a good player, but not the messiah he is made out to be.

The way the two teams played, North would have lost either way.

Im yet to see a team where that one player is the entire team...

Tonight, against the Hawks, it wasn' just no Carey, no North. It was more a case of no Archer, no Stevens, no Capuano, no Colbert AND no Carey....

After five consecutive wins, North were probably due for a loss. Having said this, full credit to the Hawks for their great effort tonight.

Go along with Con.

While North are definitely at least a 4 goal better side with Carey they are still pretty competitive without him.

But its hard to win when Archer, Capuano, Stevens, Colbert and Carey are all missing..

With all due respect to the Hawks who are coming good, the capitulation in the last qtr (what was it 6.4 to 0.2?) has got to be a worry? What say you Roo fans?

Dutch

PS. Good to see Barry Young back on track.

I knew if we lost tonight roo fans would cop the "no carey no north" rubbish.

Let me say the hawks were awesome tonight and we played poorly. As for the last quarter dutchman i was annoyed and angry at the poor display the roos showed. Yes we had carey out but if he had of played and we still played like we did tonight we still would have been beaten.

It's great s**t though!!!

I don't know whether we would have won with Carey playing as we seemed down in many areas and Hawthorn are a good ,honest team who played with enthusiasm and really backed themselves, they still turned the ball over a fair bit though and normally a team like North would punish them big time for that but last night we just turned it over straight back to them!North have got a lot of improving to do if they're going to challenge this year, and it isn't just the players who are out at the moment, they're averaging 20 goals against after 8 rounds so that's got to be a big worry.

Looking for a one man team?

Try Adelaide with and without Shaun Rehn.

I am a Crows supporter and cant help but notice our win loss ratio surrounding the big guys availability.

Sure we recently won 2 Premierships but think back, we were definately on the slide in 97 until Rehn threw off his knee guard and took them all on single handedly.

This year is just another example. crows 0-4, enter Shaun Rehn. now 2-4 and about to be 3-4. I know he is not playing terrific footy but his presence lifts the whole team.

You must realise that great players have a much greater influence on a game than just their stats. Look at how team mates lift around players like Carey, Buckley, Kelly, Hird & Voss. I wouldnt put other so called Champions in the same class because they dont lift their teammates like these players do.

Players like Crawford, Harvey, Jarman, Wanganeen, Jackovich, Grant, Modra, Lloyd, Everett, Bradley & Richardson are all good players and better than most but they cant carry teams into good form like the handfull I've mentioned.

1 man teams, no, but Adelaide is the closest you will see to one.

When Careys playing well (look at the last few weeks) the players around him seem to lift. I think he has the ability to give confidence in his teammates. He may kick 3 -4 goals himself but how many does he create?
Maybe No carey no north is a bit too strong but no carey definately brings North down a peg or two.

Earlier in the season when Micky Martin was suspended the media started coming up with this stat showing games lost by North v's games won when Martin didn't play.

No Martin, No North!!!

Archer didn't play in the Prelim loss a couple of years back - hey he didn't play last night either - No Archer No North!!!

Stevo didn't play either, No Stevo No North!!!

Where will it end????

Interesting Interesting!

Did you folks know that the Dockers have lost all of the games when Clem Michael is out and has got a very impressive winning average when he is in their side?

Also when Phil Matera and Scott Cummings line up together the eagles usually get 50% of their score from them and also have a impressive winning percentage when both are playing.

I read this in the West Australian newspaper a few weeks back - so I'm not making any of this up.

Let's not forget no Kelly no Sydney. Tony Lockett more or less intimated Sydney would have better off if Kelly had of been playing.

I agree with Con and Dutchman.

But I don't think Colbert is a big loss, he's played half a game in 18 months.

Gocats

So you weren't one of the thousands of cats supporters going off their nuts when Colbert played for North against Geelong - If you weren't then you must have been the only one!!!

Gonzo.

I most certainly was one of the Geelong supporters going off their head at Leigh Colbert at Colonial Stadium in Round 4.

But not for the fact that I believed him to be a good player, in fact I've never rated him that highly.

What I believe that most Geelong supporters were upset was, not the fact he was a good player that left, but it was the fact he was given the opportuniity to captain a side at 24. played half a practice game before getting injured and taking approximately $200,000 from a struggling club financially for doing nothing and then left without a decent explanation as to why.

I believe that he showed a lack of character and maturity in the way he left the country the day he left the club. He should have faced the music and he wimped out.

I firmly believe that one day his decision will come back to haunt him.

Wimped out?!! He attended the B&F count! And spoke to the crowd!! I think he was committed to going overseas and went with Geelong team-mates.He also regularly meets and socialises with ex-team-mates and, according to Gary Hocking, no grudges are held. Maybe you should take a leaf out of your players book.

Joel, in general I agree with you about players using cliches ,but in the Gary Hocking case he said that he plays a regular round of golf with Colbert and several other Geelong players so I don't think it was the usual "be nice" cliche, he genuinely still gets along with the guy.

Joel

Also agree re the cliche thing but I did hear Brad Scholl being interviewed before the North/Geelong game and he was asked if he intended to go harder at Colbert, he replied that he's an opposition player so he would go hard but also stated that Colbert was one of his best mates and was looking forward to a beer after the game with Colbert

Cheers

Gonzo

Give us our due

If Carey had been playing we might only have won by 8 goals not 10

I remember '94 when north beat a dunstall and Langford - less Hawks by 20 goals. People gave north their due then and thy've had a great eight years or so.

This could be the beginning of something great for the hawks, in the same way

I say "no Longmire, no North".

But realy have a look at who was missing from last years Premiership team.

CAREY
ARCHER
STEVENS
CAPUANO
MOONEY
WELSH
ALLISON
and LONGMIRE

Wake up to yourselves, the Kangaroo Machine will be back on track very very soon.

I heard Carey Archer and Capuano would be back this week and Colbert (Geelong second captain to transfer to North in search of a flag, Wade got his)will be very soon. For half fit, he looked pretty good the night we played the PUSSIES.

Pess

Top effort by the Hawks, so I hope you made it to the match and enjoyed yourself.

The thing that won the game for Hawthorn was their backline....they did not give our forwards the chance to take a mark or give our crumbers too many opportunities to score. There was that five or so minutes at the start of the last quarter where the ball was pretty much permanently in our forward line, but we just couldn't get a goal. I thought that if we could get one or two early ones, we could've come over the top to beat you (which would've been unfair as you'd outplayed us for three quarters), but your team kept the pressure on and didn't allow us that goal.

Anyway Pess, you should be feeling much better than what you did four weeks ago!

Cheers

Shinboners
Unfortunately I couldn't make it on friday night - had to make do with the telly

Dermie mentioned that he thought Schwab's coaching was quite good. One point was Holland plying well away from goals meaning that Mickey wasn't close enough to stop a few 'snap' goals by Hawk forwards.

I talked about the 1994 North 120pt flogging which , in hindsight signaled our demise for 8 years (don't mention the merger) While I hope friday was a good sign for us I don't think it bodes badly for north (like 1994 for us). You have a few guns which will be able to stand up when Carey and Archer retire
