I get the frustration here but it's a bit harsh to judge the lineup before it's played a single AFL game under a new coach.

Sure. Bring out the pitchforks next round. But hold off until then
I think its more a case of, we can see the issues with our selections and this will likely hurt us tomorrow.
Whereas if we all hold fire until after the game, isnt hindsight great will be the accusation.

Somehow we keep finding spots for VB and MacKay, who have had 150+ plus games to prove themselves.
Hopefully Pyke does have a new plan for them and we can all be shocked and amazed tomorrow. But I doubt it.

I doubt it too but I'll give Pyke, Mackay and VB the benefit of the doubt

Seems a massive exaggeration as an example. In the modern game I am pretty sure coaches are in it to win it...!
I know. I couldn't think of/find the term for the argument fallacy, so just gave one of the most well known examples.

I'm aware they are, doesn't mean they are good at what they do.

Ridiculous thread.
This time last year, everyone was bagging the shit out of Hartigan, now it's thread worthy that he isn't picked.
Of the players available, I'd consider only Lyons and maybe CEY to be unlucky to miss in place of VB or Mackay. And Lyons and CEY are just as vanilla as they are.
It seems abundantly clear that Cameron is Best 22, so will come in sooner, rather than later.
Milera, McGovern, Seedsman and Atkins are all in. Quality young players that we've taken a chance on. We picked Brad Crouch, sight unseen. Matt Crouch named on ball. All big ticks.
Knight needs game time, so will return through the SANFL, Hendo, Hampton, Otten etc aren't fit yet, and aren't necessarily upgrades on Mackay and VB anyway. Remembering that people were almost as negative about Hendo last year as they were VB and Mackay.
Menzel didn't show in the NAB games that he deserves a game in the main team yet. When he does, he will be picked. But not before.
Gore isn't ready, Kelly doesn't fit anywhere, Grigg has lost the confidence of the coaching staff (apparently), Lowden is terrible, Doedee has been injured and needs time, Wigg isn't ready yet, Shaw is worse than the 3 guys being whinged about, Jaensch retired and that's pretty much it (unless you want to argue Beech, Greenwood or Ramsey deserve a game over VB and Mackay, which would make you wrong).
Cheney over Hartigan was a head scratcher for mine, but it appears we're moving away from the defensive, lock down, contested style and moving towards a more attacking game plan. Something that has been requested by this board for years. Hartigan and Cheney offer roughly the same level of ability, but offer different strengths and weaknesses. It would appear, given NM's forward line, that Hartigan's strengths would be a better fit, but I'm sure there's a logical reason for why Cheney was selected.

Yep. Thread very premature. Who would come in for either of the players in question? Anyone who can, obviously didn't impress Pyke in the NAB games. Simple stuff this early on in the season.

I'm sure the coaches also see the potential issues with the team they've selected, but they obviously have a game plan in place and feel Cheney fits that better than Hartigan. It may just be a case of the sum of all the parts makes a better team rather than just an individual matchup.

We were saying (hoping) that this time last year too. What we saw last season was that it doesn't matter how poorly they play or how lowly they fare in the B&F, we will pick them regardless.

Even when performance finally demanded we could ignore them no longer and dropped them, they both returned within weeks.

If their B&F results were solid which showed they were filling a team-first, important to structure, crucial leadership role - and performing it well - then you could admit, Ok, there's something there that us fans in the cheap seats aren't seeing.

What I see is the same "Imagine what we'd look like without them?!" young/old player panic that we saw in 2010/11.
They've been shit for years.

Can't believe we're wasting another game on either of them; hopefully it doesn't take Pyke most of the season to realize it.

Good signs with other youngsters though.

For all the off-season talk from posters on here about how well we recruited in the outside-mid department, it does seem perplexing that Mackay is a walk-up start.

It would suggest that we didn't recruit as well as people thought, or that we didn't recruit any outside mids better than Mackay.

Don't think about that brainteaser too much. You WILL punch something.

To be fair, many of our outside players are currently unavailable (Knight, Cameron, Menzel, Hampton and Henderson all various degrees of injured or not game fit)

I'm sure the recruiters predicted that all of Hampton, knight & Cameron would be injured pre-season.

Mackay is hardly a walk up start & won't be in the side for many games if he plays like last year once we have these players return.
