I wonder if Varcoe has a touch of the "Ronnie Burns" about him. His problem is not talent but maybe it is attitude. While Shannon, not as gifted a player as Travis, tries his guts out each game and so racks up more stats than Travis. Shannon gets a game because they know what they will get from him each week and that he fits in OK with the team structure despite making a few blues during each game. A few mistakes which can be covered by our other more polished performers. Then if the game is close they can sit Shannon on the bench and load up with our better performers to get on top. Meanwhile he also allows for more midfield rotations because he can play forward and midfield. Helps keep the like of Ablett, Bartel, Corey, Selwood fresher during a game.
Again I know Shannon is a D Grade player, but I can see why he gets a game.
I can see the logic in the second part of your comment - he can play midfield more than Varcoe. But I can't agree that Varcoe is like Burns. He's far more consistent in his efforts than that. I'll be interested to see how our team lines up in the last home and away.
