I am happy with the way Carlton played on the weekend, I just watched the game again (the first 3 quarters anyway) and believe it was a game that could have easily had a different result. A couple of reasons were that I strongly believe we didnt know how to win, this is really evident when we get a lead and then have the mental lapse and let them back in. Against Essendon this happened late in the quarters, I think they got a goal at each break, within nearly 30 seconds to go in each quarter.

In each game we seem to know how to get the score on the board, so we are showing that we can win in patches, we just need to put it all together. I would let this group bond for a few weeks at least, I really believe we will spank a team in the coming weeks. Yes I am an optimist but once they put it all together and smash a team there will be no looking back as confidence and momentum are evrything in sport.

Go Blues, lets hope the spankings start this week!!

I kind of agree. I wasn't happy with the result on Saturday, but we did enough to win, and I don't see any potential changes that will drastically improve us anyway. Might as well try and get some stability, and wait until someone in the reserves is really pushing for selection.

That lack of improvement from our fringe guys is the most disappointing thing this year. Its disappointing that Setanta appears to have taken a backwards step this year, and that Bentick can't seem to get a look-in (despite Ratten being theoretically a good match for his style of game). Blackwell, Russell, Aisake, Jackson, Grigg; you'd have hoped one or two of those guys stepped up a notch, but nothing really. Even solid guys like Carazzo and Simpson have regressed. Bower and Hampson are really the only two guys who look significantly better this year (plus Jamison who shone late last year), otherwise its the big-name established players carrying the load - Judd, Stevens, Fev, Murphy etc.

horrible disposal still from all reports..

it makes absolutely no sense to drop a player for the lack of clean disposal and decision making and replace him with another one jsut as bad

fair point, but russell offers little else, at least jacko could tag someone

I agree on dropping Russell. He has all the potential in the world, but no genuine football smarts nor the will to truly have a crack. You generally don't get handed success in AFL footy and it seems that's what he's after.

Russell is simply a robot he cannot think for himself and he simply cannot read the play.

I find it hard to believe when he played juniors that people would rate him so highly as right from day 1 you could see he was not a natural reader of the game.

Russell should be shot with a ball of his own shit.

Out: Russell
In: It doesn't really matter

Would like to see Army debut, he'll run his guts out, give 100%, apply pressure and tackle fiercely. I suspect he might be one who rises to a challenge and goes a bit better in the big leagues than the level below.

When it's Russell being dropped it makes every sense. But I don't think anyone who will replace him will be just as bad - I don't think anyone is that bad.

Jackson could come in, as could Armfield, what about Ellard? He played during the NAB Cup games, and wasn't our worst performer, Pfeiffer, who also played well during the NAB Cup/Pre-season is now in the side and playing some good footy, maybe Ellard is the next player in line to make his debut?

Wouldn't mind seeing one of Jackson, Ellard or Armfield come in.

Agreed. We need another proper defender in the team to cover Collingwoods forwards. Armfield could run with Leon Davis perhaps.

Never been a fan of Russel. He's gotta go for an extended period of time. At least Armfield has guts.

Drop him just long enough to make him understand that much more commitment is required to play for this club. 20 years should do it.

Is Pfeiffer really playing that well? Sure he kicked a good goal against the Saints but I think he panics when he gets the ball - lacks composure and a left foot.

My changes for this week:

In: Bentick, Armfield/Browne (need a small defender desperately - Simpson playing on Davey on the weekend was a waste)
Out: Russell, Pfeiffer

How about the coaching staff grow some balls and draw a line in the sand. Guys like Russell, Houlihan, Scotland fn go through the motion have a$$ed and get a game. make them bloody accountable for their selection and drop them, drop the 3 of them. Id much rather have guys like Jackson, Armfield, Browne, Bentick etc in the side who will acutally give it a solid crack, hurt at a loss and give everything for the jumper. At leastit will give Scotland & Houlihan a wake up call that are not automatic selections and need to fight for their position every week. We have been far too easy going on some of our "older" blokes. I couldnt care less on how much experience they have or what they have done in the past, we need players that will give 110% week in week out.

I think you're right. Maybe the AFL coaches should take a similar approach to that of the Soccer coaches where players are more often picked on form and performance rather than reputation alone.

The message should be sent out that lazy, insipid performances will not be tolerated week-in week-out.
