How about the coaching staff grow some balls and draw a line in the sand. Guys like Russell, Houlihan, Scotland fn go through the motion have a$$ed and get a game. make them bloody accountable for their selection and drop them, drop the 3 of them. Id much rather have guys like Jackson, Armfield, Browne, Bentick etc in the side who will acutally give it a solid crack, hurt at a loss and give everything for the jumper. At leastit will give Scotland & Houlihan a wake up call that are not automatic selections and need to fight for their position every week. We have been far too easy going on some of our "older" blokes. I couldnt care less on how much experience they have or what they have done in the past, we need players that will give 110% week in week out.

I agree with you as well. Players 16th - 22nd are letting us down each week.

Until we find better replacements for these players we'll remain a bottom 4 side.

i don't think Russell is as bad as some are making him out to be here but he hasn't done enough in my view to keep his place in the team. Drop Russell this week and I also think they should drop Hampson as he has not done enough. Like many of our kids he is probably not ready for senior selection yet and should spend this year with the Ants learning the game. I would like Saddington come into the side and Pheiffer stay. Also don't drop Carrazzo or Scotland b/c of a couple of bad games. We have no one in the ants that could do any better

Agreed. We need another proper defender in the team to cover Collingwoods forwards. Armfield could run with Leon Davis perhaps.

Never been a fan of Russel. He's gotta go for an extended period of time. At least Armfield has guts.

Isn't Hartlett back from suspension this week?

He's available, but whether or not he plays is another story. It's another tall option up forward, or in defence, we don't want to be too top heavy, especially with Kreuzer now in the side, when Hartlett played, Kreuzer didn't, also the prospect of Setanta coming back in... unless Hampson is out, which leaves Kreuzer and Cloke sharing ruck duties all night, Hartlett can play CHF all night

I kind of agree. I wasn't happy with the result on Saturday, but we did enough to win, and I don't see any potential changes that will drastically improve us anyway. Might as well try and get some stability, and wait until someone in the reserves is really pushing for selection.

That lack of improvement from our fringe guys is the most disappointing thing this year. Its disappointing that Setanta appears to have taken a backwards step this year, and that Bentick can't seem to get a look-in (despite Ratten being theoretically a good match for his style of game). Blackwell, Russell, Aisake, Jackson, Grigg; you'd have hoped one or two of those guys stepped up a notch, but nothing really. Even solid guys like Carazzo and Simpson have regressed. Bower and Hampson are really the only two guys who look significantly better this year (plus Jamison who shone late last year), otherwise its the big-name established players carrying the load - Judd, Stevens, Fev, Murphy etc.

Agreed our numbers 16+ are not there yet.

But in Setantas defence - he has been ill. And Aisake not be able to shake injuries. For Jackson, Blackwell and Bentick (and to a degree Carrots and Simmo) the arrival of Judd, Stevens and Hadley, combined with Gibbs moving forward has pushed them to the back and starved their opportunities. Just goes to show where we were the last few years and where we are now. When you have the likes of Judd running about - it makes the difference in development pretty obvious.

I have a lot of time for Jackson and Grigg. They are still very young and if injuries emerge they will be required and forced to step up. Could be there making.

Jackson could come in, as could Armfield, what about Ellard? He played during the NAB Cup games, and wasn't our worst performer, Pfeiffer, who also played well during the NAB Cup/Pre-season is now in the side and playing some good footy, maybe Ellard is the next player in line to make his debut?

Wouldn't mind seeing one of Jackson, Ellard or Armfield come in.

How's Smokin' Joe's recovery from injury going? How's his form for the Ants? He's a speedy defender who has already proven himself to a degree in a few games last year, could be very handy on Davis or Didak.

Would this also apply to Simpson and Carazzo?

I only hope that if J Russell is selected this week they make him get on BF and read all the stuff posted on him, if he doesnt fire up after being subjected to that he never will. I realy do beleive we can win this week

OUT: Russel, Hampson
IN: Armfield, Hartlett

we need a decicated CHF, not a fill in, so bring in hartlett and let him get blooded - hampson needs to develop a tad more too, and kruezer + cloke have shown they can hold ruck. armfield should help with the smaller forwards and rebound.

Simpson as i mentioned last week could have been a late withdrawal. Was well underdone and by the way he played probably shouldnt have played. That said Simpson is the one person on our list that each and every week puts his body on the line and bleeds for the jumper. Carrazzo athough his disposal by foot is shocking gives his 110% everyweek and does the team things.

we are not going to make the finals in 2008

this is the year when we need to making the tough calls on players and finding out who wants to be at the club long term and who doesn't.

we can not continue to reward mediocrity

For me Russell and Hampson should be given a run with the Ants.

OUT: Russell, Hampson

IN: Armfield/Grigg, O'Hailpin

i totally agree. hampson i like but not sure if there is room. Prefer army to debut but grigg was ok in R1 i thought. setanta for rocca yes, but who will jamo take? waite on cloke i would have thought>?

I agree on dropping Russell. He has all the potential in the world, but no genuine football smarts nor the will to truly have a crack. You generally don't get handed success in AFL footy and it seems that's what he's after.

Doesn't this statement contradict itself a tad??

I think if any change should be made it should be Hartlett in out Simpson if he is sore, otherwise Scotland as he is very slow and am worried about him being able to keep up with the game...I know that Hoolahoop get easy kicks and is soft but his disposal by either foot is first rate and is pretty quick....

Collingwood are a young side and although Hampson and Hartlett are very inexperienced I would imagine they will be matching up on the same. I say the coaching staff should put the acid on them and challenge them. I would be rucking Hampson against Wood and Hartlett at CHF will get Nathan Brown. No use keeping him in the seconds and learning against hacks, lets play them against their contemporaries and see what they've got.

I think Russell should be given another go as last year against the pies he played a pretty decent game, hope he can get some confidence as a forward and do the same this week.

AND DON'T FORGET......CARN THE BLUES!!!!

Houlihan doesnt have a heart, trys to take on the opposition and gives away the footy far to much. Bring in Armfield or Bentick, players that will put their god damn body on the line and fight for the jumper.

Russell has had enough chances. Ratts has backed him in and i know that for a fact and he still cant perform. He doesnt have it, bad selection, oh well we move on. Give another kid an opportunity, Ellard for one. In the pre-season he looked as though he would split a gut to play, his hungry, young, wants to make an impression. Their the players i want to play for my team.

I am with u on Houlihan been weak, however the game has changed and putting ur body on the line doesnt win u games anymore unfortunately, otherwise Bentick and Co, would be stars and Pagan would still be coach. However, todays game is on running power and possesion Bentick will only add to our lack of pace in the midfield. We need quicker players with good disposal he doesnt fit that role. With Murph and Carrots in there we are already not the quickest hence they are trying to compensate with quicker outside players like Hoolahoop and Russel.

RUSSELL COULDNT FIND A FOOTY IN A FOOTBALL BAG, HOULIHAN IS COMPLACENT AND EXPECTS TO PLAY. I couldnt care how fast or how skilled they are if they have no heart pi$$ them off. Remember back to round 3 last year... Geelong had a slow one paced midfield which was never gong to get them anywhere. Ablett aside Bartell, Corey, Selwood, Ling & Chapman dont posses the pace of Asafa Powell but are hard at it and find the footy. I WANT DEDICATED & PASSIONATE FOOTBALLERS FOR THE CARLTON FOOTBALL CLUB NOT ATHLETES.

I'd be really disappointed, not to say pissed off, if Hampson was ommitted.
The guy is our future no.1 ruckman, therefore for development we need to play him as much as possible in 2008. No reason what so ever to omitt him.

I wouldn't call Corey or Chapman slow I reckon they get over the ground pretty quick and what pace they lack if any, the make up with footy smarts and reading the play, neither of which Bentick posseses.
