He was never in the side to be the leading target and kick a bag of goals. This is the frustrating thing about discussions regarding Petrenko.

The only time he was established in our side was in 2012. We had the 2nd highest scoring team in the land. We had Walker kicking 63 goals and Tippett / Callinan chipping in with 40 each. We had Porps spending 60% of his time up forward and he contributed 30 goals. With that forward line we had more than enough goalkicking power - we needed a player a defensive forward. Someone whose job was to chase, tackle, harass, block, smoth, etc. He performed this very well and correctly was best 22 in 2012.

Unfortunately for us we have had absolutely nothing that even closely resembles a forward line since the end of 2012. There is no room for a defensive forward if you can't kick goals.

For me - Petrenko is worth keeping on the list for 2014, but would prefer not to play more than 10 games of AFL footy.

We should be building towards a 2015 forward line of:

Resting Mid / Smack / Lynch
Petrenko / Walker / Betts.
Replace with Cameron and I agree

What I want to know, is who has been working with Kerridge on his field kicking in the off season. Because whoever it was, needs to teach basically everybody else on our list how to kick too. The improvement has been massive.

His kicking technique has never been an issue. He is a lovely kick of the footy. Kerridge's issue was adjusting to the pace of AFL footy and his decision making. Lets not forget he has only played 15 games of AFL footy.

He will be a ripper for us. No matter how shit 2014 - one of the positives is that we are pumping games into Kerridge.

He's never been bad, but it was never really identified as a strength of his either. Most of the the passes I've seen him deliver so far this season have been laser like. He keeps that up, and he's already one of the better kicks in our side.

Thats 9 games too many.

My 2015 forward line at this stage would be:

HF: Cameron Walker Lynch
FF: Johnston McKernan Betts

But that would be on the premise of getting 15-20 games into Cameron, Johnston and smack this year. No point giving them half a dozen games in dribs and drabs and expecting them to perform/improve.

Cameron is just getting more and more hype on bigfooty. How any one can suggest he locks down a spot as a forward in 2015 before he plays a single game for us at AFL level is astounding. I could understand if he was a top draftee, but he is currently sitting on our rookie list.

Even so, my Cameron still trumps your Petrenko. In fact my niece trumps your Petrenko.

I am not even sure what you are on about. What have you seen about Cameron that makes you think he will be a starting member of our forward line in 2015? Anything?

Or are you just regurgitating what you have read on bigfooty.

Are you deliberately not reading the bits where I said 'at this stage' and 'on the premise that he gets 15-20 games into him'? Because those bits are kind of central to the statement. Kid oozes class and can kick a goal. Still work to be done but I'm confident he'll be a keeper. Yes, he's a rookie pick, but at least he's a high rookie pick, unlike Petrenko.

The bigger question here is how the hell you can advocate Petrenko getting 10 games this year let alone being our forward pocket in 2015. My goodness man. I wasn't joking when I said my neice has him trumped. I saw her take a mark 5m out on the weekend and she not only had the nerve to go back and take the shot, she kicked it as well.

It wouldn't be quite so bad if Petrenko was just an ineffectual nonentity, but worse, he is a flakey liability who costs us at critical times. Surely we've learned our lesson. Petrenko in 2015... you must hate us

Agreed. I'd like to see him given an opportunity at AFL level, because I thought he showed quite a bit in his few pre-season games. I don't expect him to play more than a handful of games (5 would make me more than happy). The odds on him becoming a fixture in the team next year would have to be fairly remote.

Give the kid time to develop. He could turn out OK, he could turn out to be another Jacky or Petrenko. We haven't seen enough of him - and he hasn't had time to show what he's capable of just yet. He looks promising for now, but there's no need to go overboard with excitement about him (or any of the other rookie listed players for that matter).

Cameron is nowhere near it yet, all our other rookies look more ready to play senior footy especially physically

I feel terrible saying this, but I'm not sure my opinion about the club has changed after three games.

We will finish between 6th and 12th. We've been in each game and then fallen apart mentally (and physically?). We have an injury list that's close to the worst in the league and we can't cover it like others can.

We're at a fork in the road.

It is a pity that we have so little trust left in the club to take us down the right path.

How many games is "enough". In Petrenko's case, he'd played about 30 by the time I made up my mind. To that date he'd shown precisely nothing, yet still managed to achieve a massive reputation on BigFooty.
Never rated Petrenko as a forward personally. He won't play in our next Premiership that's for sure. I was more talking about Lyons, Johnson and Martin. BOth of the later two have now had enough chance IMO. They are not up to standard. Lyons can play a role.

Would like to see Cameron earn his spot with a lengthy stretch of solid SANFL games.

We've never gifted games on potential before and this approach has served us well.

He is also an easy target by many fans on this site

Agreed, people see the opposition move the ball quickly and get in behind Truck, it is the midfield that doesn't chase/apply pressure.

One of the reasons that Thommo should be eased out the season, the game has gone past him and the opposition teams know they can exploit him.

We beat the Saints and Port lose to Brisbane and all of a sudden our season feels a lot better. That would have us 1 3 and Port 2 2. Not a huge difference.

Can't actually see Port losing. But it's possible without Wingard and Monfries.
Brisbane would have to start now if they think they're going to beat Port. Port might have lost Wantfrees and Wingard, but Brisbane just lost the only two players they have.

We should debut him as the sub. Give him half a game. Then back to the SANFL. He'll learn a lot that way.

Round 1 next year he'll be in the position to play a lot of football for us. Don't play him at that point though. Give him another month in the SANFL, maybe three.

Can't say that I rate any of those players. That said, I expect at least 2 of them to survive the end of year clean out purely due to the sheer volume of dead wood to be culled. Which 2 remains to be seen.

The bolded bit is the exact part I read. At this stage you are saying Charlie Cameron is best 22 without even playing a game of AFL football.

I have stated the reason that I would like to see Petrenko in our side in 2015. Its only on the basis that we have a forward line capable of kicking goals. Petrenko has severe limitations, but is a solid defensive forward.

Have you watched our first 3 games? Our entire side is full of players who are flakey liabilities who cost us at critical times. Bit harsh to just single out Petrenko for his brain snap.
