How would it go down if you said the opposite?

"I really want to get home to WA, but nearly every player at West Coast has their kids around all the time and it sounds awful, so I choose Fremantle for lifestyle reasons".

Fremantle is nicer than Perth anyway.
He had earlier made it clear he had requested a move to West Coast for family reasons.

Today, he said he and his partner Caitlin had been under pressure following their children's diagnoses in a city far from home.

"My oldest boy, as soon as we got to Geelong he was basically diagnosed," Kelly said.

"He's non-verbal so … there's weekly speech therapy sessions, there's weekly occupational therapy session with him.

"Earlier this year we discovered that one of my twin boys is also going to be going down the same path
where he's going to need the exact same treatment."

I understand that. His kids have basically got him the trade he wanted.

If you were young and single and hated kids, could you request Fremantle for those reasons?

What's to be gained by justifying his decision? Treloar was honest, ...
We never know if they’re being honest or not.

Have you ever heard a player say “I decided against going to that club because the senior coach seems like a tool, and when I met the captain he wouldn’t shut the fu** up ...”?

Have you ever heard a player say “I decided to go to that club because their physio is friggen’ hot, and because it’s an easier commute from where I want to live, and because it was a lot more money ...”?

They peddle out the same old cliches that endear them to the fans of the new club, those things the fans want to believe are true and honest.

There is no reason for Cats fans to feel his leaving somehow reflects on them, or the Eagles for that matter.
Geelong is pretty irrelevant to what I'm saying and I'm not angry at all in how things have played out. I feel like we've been reasonably compensated; if we'd been shafted perhaps I'd feel differently. It's the question of 'why Eagles and not Fremantle?' if it was purely for family reasons that people are wondering about.

I'm pretty sure there's more to it, but Kelly's happy and the clubs are happy, so it doesn't really matter.

I think Freo have stuffed up here. They should.be targeting children, I mean how much of a gun will they be if they blood a bunch of 10 year olds so by the time they are 23 they have 300 games under their belt.

In fact they should even think about toddlers

What an amazing thread title.

Really? So you are fine with why he wanted out, just questioning his choice of club, or perhaps the media around kids is unsettling you

Well done for completely missing my point. Not having a go at Kelly at all, good luck to him.

Just a hypothetical about wanting to go to a certain club because you don’t have kids. Would that be acceptable?

I think it stinks that Cats gave him a start and this is the thanks they get.
I hate this train of thought.

He was drafted at pick 24 a year after finishing runner-up in the WAFL B&F at 23. He was going to be drafted, the Cats didn't give him a start out of the goodness of their heart, they saw a good player and used a decent pick on him - but he earned his start through his own performance. No gifts.

Jesus. I'm contributing to a thread. If you're going to get triggered by posts like mine which are not even remotely critical of Kelly, West Coast, or anyone else, you may need to block out some time because you'll probably be doing a fair bit of posting on here today.

A snapshot of how I feel about this: there's probably a bit more to it than has been revealed, but Kelly got what he wanted, West Coast got what it wanted and Geelong got a fair return, so it's a good outcome. Just take a few moments to digest that and let us know if it's really worth getting so defensive about what I've posted.

My point is Treloar didn't peddle out the same old cliches, so presumably he was speaking honestly.

Rumour has it a particular player on the Freo list was the reason Freo wasn't an option for the 'family' last year, had nothing to do with Tim BTW..
Ah ok well that makes sense. There's defs something going on behind the scenes cos if you were in the same situation as him you'd think as long as you got back to WA you wouldn't be too fussed if you didn't get your first preference, so weird he froze them out from the start.

It's just bizarre. I'd think that every AFL club would be a family friendly environment. Freo has players that have kids too.

I really thought it was strange how it said his wife was estatic that he got to West Coast. My first thought was.. Is the wife a West Coast fan or something? Maybe she is bum chums with other players wives there? Maybe West Coast offered/organised a job for her?

It just makes no sense at all.

The only other thing I can think of.. which I just thought of... Did West Coast go outside the normal boundaries for player assistance and make some sort of special arrangement to hire specialist child care people? He has two kids with autism, so could they have done something like this?

It just can't be as simple as "West Coast likes kids and West Coast players have kids".. wtf is this rubbish? Every footy club is family friendly.. if they weren't, they'd have no fans!

Kids wanna see their dad win and make lots of money.

Seriously though, I don't see whats wrong with just saying you wanna play for a contender instead of all this other nonsense.
This is why people are annoyed about it. If he had of done what Tom Lynch did and just said he wants to play in his home state for a team which he believes he will win a flag with.. people would have been fine with it. But using the family and kids thing, as if Freo is some sort of Satanist Cult, is just ridiculous.

FFS Kelly wanted to go to WC. For whatever reason he was never interested in Freo. If he has grown up a west coast supporter and looks at both clubs as a destination its pretty easy to see why he chose WC and this is not about bagging Freo. He is 24 had to fight and scrap to get drafted and now that he has made it he probably feels like fxck it, i now hold all the cards and will now decide my future. WC are in the premiership window, have a great culture, playing group and coaches. Freo are far off a premiership, had no coach till a few weeks ago and no ceo. Pretty simple decision i would think. And again this isnt about bagging freo its just the reality of the situation. I think Kelly has been very diplomatic in why he chose WC over Freo, what else is he going to say? I reckon the salt from the richmond supporters is purely based on WC becoming a bigger threat to their "dynasty"! I am also wondering how Danger feels right now.
