No More COLA!

The 9.8% may disappear but the AFL will implement some different mechanism to support the struggling Swans and Giants.

From that article, it states "an allowance is likely to be granted to Swans players who earn below a certain income with that figure yet to be determined" and this is how they will manipulate the system.

A player who gets $120,000 will now only get $100,000 plus some extra cash from the new COLA to make the difference and that extra $20,000 will go to Buddy or Tippett.

Nothing is changing.

Swans' CEO Andrew Ireland and chairman Andrew Pridham said in a statement that the club was disappointed with rival clubs' ongoing campaign to remove the allowance.

"The club has used the allowance for its intended purpose – to provide all players on our list compensation for the higher costs associated with living in Sydney. Our club believes that COLA is an integral part of equalisation in competition," the statement said.

Typical Ireland Bullshit!

Sydney have primarily used the COLA to land Tippett & Franklin - 2 of the top-10 paid players in the AFL ... rather than paying the rookies an extra allowance.

If they were to keep a COLA, it should be capped for salaries under $100K ... & quite frankly it should not only apply to Sydney teams. Players on $100K+ don't need a COLA!

No issue with GWS keeping theirs for a few years - until they become competitive.

Sydney salary squeeze (karma) will be on as Franklin's salary rises ... so who can we raid 1st - Rohan?

Sydney are going to find themselves in a lot of trouble in 4+ years. The AFL better stick to what they said and not bail them out when the Franklin deal goes pear shaped.

I'm not sure what Ireland expected after their actions to get Tippett and Franklin...

More like 2 years if the COLA is stripped.

Tippet and Franklin could make that club squillions. capture a large part of a swinging market across NSW.

Scrap the lot and make it an even playing field.

Michael Jordan once said, "talent wins games but teamwork and intelligence wins championships"

If the scouts, list managers, recruiting agents, coaches all work together - the best club will win the premiership, not the club that can afford to recruit, steal or entice players to go to that club.

At the moment, the AFL is an uneven playing field.

COLA was a joke, hopefully its truly gone. Minimum wage players maybe, beyond that bad luck. Why should for example a player from Adelaide be able to go there, get his 10% extra, buy a house etc. Then at the end of career sell up, return to Adelaide and have more money than a player who was drafted to a Melbourne club.

There is pros and cons of getting drafted to every state. If Sydney is so great then living in an area that isn't quite as desirable as a suburb an Adelaide player may live in it must be worth the "sacrifice".

AFL rookies get something like $45,000

They should be given a cheque by the AFL each year for 10% of that as they are the ones who need to additional COLA. The clubs have nothing to do with it.

Exactly. Dimwit implied this is how it works. But clearly the AFL give the Syds 9.8% and they oversee the COLA.

COLA can only work on fixed amounts, for rookies etc. Once the contracts have been renegotiated there is no way of knowing for sure that a player is being paid exactly what they would at any other club, plus 10%.

I bet they have it on the set wages at the bottom end, then a whole group of players in the middle who get close to 10% less than anywhere else, plus 10% COLA then guys like Franklin and Tippett at the top getting the rest.

It's going to be quite amusing when other teams starts poaching their players.
