No Question Where Our Biggest Problem Lies

Thought my subtle, retiring style had accidently upset a fellow poster. No, all good here. Unfortunately working tonight but will have the trans going somewhere no doubt.

nah all good. One of the more entertaining posters on BF.
Back to the subject.... our biggest problem is the fact we haven't
beaten the saints for so long.... we got close last year.
Just hope we give it a good shove and don't get any serious injuries.

General consensus at my end seems to be we get within 40 points we'll take it. Crikey, when I think of this clubs history. :o

All the other sides play a couple of extra players back in their defensive 50 then move forward as the over lap player to creat run when the win the ball back. Call it what you like a loose men or a flood. But we don't seem to want to do it. We didn't do it under Pagan and now we aren't doing it under Ratten.
There would not be a hole for Richardson or Brown to run into if Richmond were playing Hawthornor the Swans.
Can our club and it's coaches not understand that we first need to have a defensive mind set as we aren't a good team yet ?

Wish u were coaching... why are we the only team in the AFL that doesn't crowd the opposition fwd line... its not like we have SOS and Southbey back their

I'll pay that one Gilly, but have you been there...Pffft, Dullsville with a capital "D"
Now Cranium I thought that was Perth. Is there anywhere you like champ?

Crystal ball?

Cheers. Doesn't make me feel any better unfortunately.

I've been hanging onto this for a while now but I'm going to say it. I'm starting to think there might be issues other than on-field incompetence that are white-anting the club. I have absolutely no idea what they might be but I just can't believe this group of players can't be more competitive. I've read the other sites and the rumours of the usual suspects destabilizing the team but nothing specific. If any of it is true, we are truly sunk.

Hrrrrm. Care to share?

Thanks but should we believe everything we read? I should think not.

In saying that, our leadership or lack thereof has been a problem for a while now. Half of our leadership group aren't performing at the moment.

There's several reasons why we don't crowd the opposition fwd line well - and it is our biggest weakness. First is fitness. Just don't have midfielders who are fit enough to go all day. Either they are young and still developing that body (Gibbs, Murphy), or they are struggling with injury (Judd, Stevens). Secondly, desire. Our midfielders have to want to run back into defence, want to put their body in front of a big forward, just as much as they want to run forward and kick goals. Too many guys don't want to do the hard yards to get back there. Thirdly, our ruckmen aren't up to it yet. The biggest factor in filling up the hole is how well your ruckman can take up space. Cloke is a crasher and basher at center bounces, a handy bloke who tries his guts out (and our best option right now), but still not up to it. Hampson is improving every game, and we'll see a massive improvement in our ability to zone off once he gets his match fitness and ability to read the game up.

Sorry don't agree. If we aren't fit enough then tell then tell the two extra players to sit back there and don't come out. It is not a matter of fitness. Its the coaches and gameplan.

I'll preface this post by saying that finally we are on the right track but still have a long way to go. Our problems are:

  • Lack of big bodies down back and generally
  • Lack of experienced players in general
  • a one dimensional forward line-our players need to snap out of the mentality of kicking to Fevola at all costs. i like the look of Edwards and Fischer will be great but we need crumbers-Schnieder or Welsh would have been handy
  • Lack of ruckmen - Hampson has a huge upside, Cloke is a battler and too short and Ackland is well, Hackland
  • Poor foot skills, decision-making and poor tackling skills eg. Houlihan's effort on Milne
  • Lack of investment in the player development area over a long period of time. Compare this to Collingwood who select young blokes that fit in nicely
  • Five years of Denis Pagan and his old school mentality-Sorry but I can't get over the money-hungry leech who slowed player development and generally sucked away their confidence.
  • Stevens and Judd still not match fit
I think we will display more imnprovement in the middle and latter stages of the year.

Cool idea. Fev will love it, as he goes against a 1 on 3 ALL day with the oppositions two spares that they leave in theirs.

The problem of conceeding big scores, as we so painfully witnessed last night, is not necessarily about stopping big forwrds and taking up space. We actually did that pretty well last night.
It's about not giving them so many chances to do damage. The amount of un-pressured delivery was a disgrace last night. As the game wore on they regularly spotted up a 3 on 1 in the midfield, which had generally come from a 3 on 1 in our F50. Fev kept chasing about 3 blokes, who would then spot 3 on 1.

How the hell does that happen regularly?

That IS a fitness issue. They keep running, we get slower and further behind.

Our midfield ATM is NOT up to it fitness wise:
Judd, Stevens, Hadley, Pfeiffer and O'hAilpin all had interrupted pre-seasons.
Its acknowledged among senior players that it takes around 4-5 pre-seasons to get good run in your legs to run out modern games (have heard several players say this on SEN from time to time).
That takes out Hampson, Bower, Murphy.

That's 8 out of 22 that are below where they need to be to be competitive for four quarters with a good running side.

How many games do you think you can win with this fitness level.

.......and people want Bentick to come in, another one who has had an interrupted pre-season.
Until Judd, Stevens, Hadley and O'hAilpin get their fitness base up we will struggle against good senior running sides.
