I went on a holiday to South Queensland, and was suprised that there was no zoo in Brisbane.

There are wildlife parks in Brisbane, the Gold Coast & Toowoomba; and there is the Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast, but this was only a small operation until the late Steve Irwin's fame grew in the mid 1990s. However there is no "traditional" zoo in central Brisbane, established in the late 1800s or early 1900s, like Sydney, Melbourne, Perth & Adelaide.

Was there ever a zoo in Brisbane? Or does anyone know why one was never established? Please let me know if you have any answers.

Used to be one in the Botanical Gardens, unsure of when it closed though.

About 15mins north of the Brisbane CBD.
Hardly a zoo, more like a wildlife park. Currumbin Sanctuary is bigger.

We have Tiger Island at Dreamworld and the polar bears at Seaworld. Years ago there used to be a wildlife safari with Lions and everything roaming free and climbing over your car.

Yes, it's now called "queen street mall" ;)

There was a zoo across the river near Bulimba but it washed away in the floods in 1890's, I am pretty sure there was one in New Farm Park as well early on in the 1900's

All three sites would have flooded perhaps this is why they haven't survived. Also People should remember up until the 1970's Brisbane was a town, It wasn't a major settlement like Syd or Melb and not even like most of the other state capitals
