If you get along with your neighbours, going round without being aggressive and speaking to them will get you the better outcome.
That's not always true. People are often different and unreasonable when drunk, especially when surrounded by their friends. Or their friends might be the problem. Who knows?

I have no problem with approaching someone the next day and saying "hey that party last night was a bit full on, maybe you can tone it down next time" or whatever. But if you want it resolved at the time, the best thing to do is let the police handle it. That's why they ask that you let them do so.

The people next door had one that went to 3am on Saturday and it was ****ing loud, I play background stuff in my room when I sleep and it was right over the top of that. Usually I'm pretty easy going/give and take with stuff and it's only happened twice but I'm 95% sure that they were the ones that complained to the council a twice about my pet Rooster crowing  so I had to get rid of him.

Noone around me does it regularly, so I'll happily let it slide the few times it happens.

In a similar vein, one of my neighbors came round the other day asking if I had a problem with her dog barking (just over the back fence, the dog really isn't that bad at all), apparently someone (not me) had made a complaint to council, first she found out was when she got a letter saying they've got a complaint and would be round to check it out.

Apparently whoever complaint was keeping a diary of every time the dog made any noise, seems a dick move to me when a simple knock on the door and polite conversation would do.

All that aside, if the parties are happening every night you could always sneak over and flick the circuit breakers. Horn in the morning just makes me feel sorry for the poor bastard next door who has been kept up until 3am by music, then gets woken up again by a horn.

Dogs are a problem. One of my neighbours has a large dog that they keep in a tiny walled-off courtyard with no grass and no way for it to see out (it's in a block of townhouses). It's always barking, but apparently it barks nonstop during the day on weekdays when the owners aren't home.

Someone has evidently made a complaint because I got a council questionnaire about it in the mail the other day. I'd fill it out and complain, because it's bloody annoying and the dog really shouldn't be kept in those conditions, but all that would happen is that the dog would be destroyed. Seems rough to make the dog pay the penalty for having crap owners.

"Destroy" them?

No... they get sent to a massive farm out in the country where they get to run around endlessly all day, eat twice a day, play with all the other dogs and sleep in a comfy bed.

At least that's what happened to our family dog when I was a kid. Maybe you should suggest that place to your neighbour!

Mate, I would kill for our neighbours (or just kill our neighbours) to play something as musical as Mambo no. 5, the only words to the music they play is "doof doof doof doof doof dodododododododod doofdoofdoofdoofdoofdoofdoof doof doof doof doof wububububububububububububububub doof doof doof", it's complete toilet music. Repetitive, monotonous, irritating.

When I lived at home with mum, the neighbours occasionally had a party, maybe 2 or 3 times a months, and played musical music til the sunlight hours when I had work at 7 on sunday mornings. It didn't bother me as it was music and I usually fell asleep. Now I've moved out with the missus, I can safely say the toilet music is MUCH more disruptive to the sleep thing, and also the neighbours listening to it are much less approachable.

You really need to relax and let it go with your neighbours, you are one of the lucky ones.
This made me laugh out loud......

The way i see it is...I went to many parties and had many parties that went well into the early hours when i was a young adult. Lots of good times were had and only ever had a few visits from the cops to turn it down. Now when my neighbours have a party i just see it as me copping my fair share and let them get on with it. I have one particular neighbour that is 2 doors down that has one nearly every weekend and plays loud music. It only bothers me when they turn it up and then turn it down and then turn it up over and over again. If they keep it at one level even if its loud im able to just block it out and get to sleep.

Probably helps that im deaf in one ear so i just lay on my good side and i drift off no worries.

It can piss you off when there is shit music playing loud on a weeknight. My policy is to suck it up, they are having fun, so long as it is a rare thing then I think you just deal with it. You too might want a random late party some time...

Isn't the dog (as well as multiple neighbours) already paying the penalty for it having crap owners?

I haven't met them but they know I have young children from hearing them in the backyard and chucking the ball back over for us. They have regular gatherings but it never involves excessive music and never 1am on a Tuesday night and sounds like older people.
I'm assuming the owners are away and their child is taking advantage of it as the music was a mix of nightclub doof doof, shit rap like fiddy cent and gay party tunes. I'm not going to approach a bunch of drunk Tuesday night clubbers on my own at 1am and I'm not putting up with it either as once it woke up my 1y old (who's bedroom it was less than 10m from) we'd have been up all night and gone to work and daycare with no sleep so Police were called. The horning I now regret as I'd have disturbed others .

to be honest whether you have young children or not or whether you get up at 6am is irrelevant. that's not your neighbour's problem.

call the cops if it's loud music after 1am if you want, but you having kids or having to get up at 6am shouldn't come into it.

a mate of mine almost got into a fight for mowing his lawn at 10am on a sunday morning when his nextdoor neighbour works nightshift. the bloke legitimately wanted him to stop mowing his lawn because it was interrupting his sleep.

Goes both ways, a couple of young kids near where I live get in a regular screaming match at around 6am with their mother screaming at them to shut up.

They're as regular as the birds chirping and crowing at daylight around 5am.

Not much chance of sleeping through that cacophony of noise, if the birds don't wake you up the screaming kids and mother will.

Always worse in summer with the earlier daylight.

No decent person would crank a stereo at full capacity at 1am on Tuesday night and whilst my or my children's sleeping needs on a midweek night maybe irrelevant to the neighbour it certainly is relevant under WA law and to WA Police this it becomes relevant to the neighbour.
It is ****heads like this with no sense of common decency that are the reason that WA has such draconian laws in the first place like the banning of drinking alcohol at the beaches in Perth.

We had 4 Uni guys move into the rental next door a couple of years ago. The blinds we always down and we never heard any noise coming out of there. For the first year we were convinced that they had a meth lab in there they were that quiet, until one day one of the lads knocks on our door to let us know that they're having a party on Saturday night and that it might get a bit loud. No probs I say, can't believe you guys have lived there for a whole year and you're finally throwing your first party. Anyway, it's a hot summer night and I'm outside drinking beers and having a bit of a perve over the fence at a few Uni aged girls dancing around their backyard. The music was barely loud enough for me to hear though. Couldn't hear it at all when inside. I wound up sticking my head over the fence at about 9PM and asked if they could turn up the volume a bit. The kids had pretty good taste in music. Party finished just before 11PM. WTF is wrong with kids of today?

I think you have to start being a bit quieter after midnight. Depends on the occasion though. I remember having a party with some friends on Canada Day and they were telling us to be quiet by 8pm which was ridiculous. On another occasion (Housewarming/St.Patricks Day) we left a note at the neighbours telling them we were having a party and it might get loud. We also invited them to come around and introduce themselves if they wish. Lady next door came over with some food and had a glass of wine which was nice.

I can relate to the kids thing though. Now we have a baby it can be frustrating if people are loud. Mainly because I'd like to party too :p

I re-read the OP - Honking your horn at 6am is a dick move - They were having a party to enjoy themselves, the fact that it was loud and annoyed you was an unintentional byproduct - Your dick move to honk your horn had no other motive but to annoy them and wake them up -

A couple of months ago I was hitchhiking from Darwin to Alice Springs - I got picked up by a bus full of backpackers who'd be travelling around together - We set up camp in one of the free camping sites along the highway - We had a few drinks into the night but I went to sleep pretty early because I was buggered -

As it was one of the backpackers birthday the following day/midnight, a couple of them stayed up and had a few more drinks. When it hit midnight they sang happy birthday... I could kind of hear them because I was still awake, but I think the heat had more to do with that than their noise...

Anyway, the next morning, as soon as the sun broke, all the old grey nomad caravaning baby boomer f*cks came over and started banging pots and waking all of us up (I was already up because I hitting the road again to hitchhike) and complained about the 'obscene noise' and 'screaming and yelling happy birthday' at 2.30am in the morning... They were off the mark though because Happy Birthday was specifically sung at midnight... they like to exagerrate -

There was some pretty heinous racist stuff like 'What country are you all from? Whose bus is this? We wouldn't do this in your country' rah rah crap - Funny as when the guy who owned the bus got out of his tent and had the broadest Australian accent in the whole camp -

Anyway, these old caravaning grey baby boomer f*cks "camp" out in the outback in their expensive caravans with attached satellites and all their bullshit - They were entitled dicks who must've forgotten what it's like to be young -

Only absolute dicks respond by banging pots/honking horns in the morning without first even approaching someone during the night to ask them to turn down --

And waking him up/keeping him awake at 1am on a Tuesday when he has to be up early for work is not annoying? You sound like a typical self-centred, entitled Gen-Yer.

I once lived in a small block of flats and the guy next door had a loud party on a Sunday night that went on until 6.00am at which point I am assuming neighbour and his friends crashed out. The music kept me awake all night and I didn't get any sleep at all. I did ask them to turn it down several times, but each time they turned it down a fraction only to turn it back up minutes later. Anyway, I had a shower, breakfast and left for work around 7am, but not before I turned on my stereo to the same volume that they had it on all night and left for work. It was still blaring when I got home at around 5pm. Hung over nieghbour sticks his head out when he heard me opening the door and says, thanks a lot mate, I couldn't sleep all day. :rainbow:

I acknowledged that it was annoying but it wasn't their intention to annoy them - No one at the house would've gone "Hey, do you know what? People need to work tomorrow, let's crank the music to piss them off"

That didn't happen - They had a party, there was some fallout -

Dick Move OP blared and honked the horn for no other reason than to try to wake up people -

He even admitted beforehand that he never even asked them to turn down -

If he had asked a couple of times, and got a rude response or something, then fair game -

But he didn't, and therefore, a dick move

I'm not really in favour of petty retaliation, but I don't really understand the distinction in this case. Anyone blasting music at 1am on a Tuesday doesn't need someone knocking on their door to be made aware that they're inconveniencing their neighbours.

I've posted this elsewhere before but when i was living with my GF's folks for a while there neighbors would have really loud house parties every Tuesday without fail that would go until 2-4am. On a few occasions i would either go to the back fence to try to tell them keep it down (which would normally be met with "f**k off d**khead" or the like) i started trying to go to the front door to tell them off but no one would ever answer. Called the cops a few times but they never came. Anyway it came to head one day when i rocked home, walked in through the front door and the nieghbors parents were sitting there with my GF's parents, i had to play mediator but essentially the neighbors were trying to say "it's okay for them to have parties at that time because they work shifts, no one works 9-5 anymore". Idiots.
