I have no problem with approaching someone the next day and saying "hey that party last night was a bit full on, maybe you can tone it down next time" or whatever. But if you want it resolved at the time, the best thing to do is let the police handle it. That's why they ask that you let them do so.
I reckon you only get to play one of these cards.

I know my neighbours and if they were annoyed by my music being too loud (I doubt they would be, I have no interest in playing music so loud I can't hold a conversation on my own property and I would probably tell them beforehand if I was having a big party) I'd be fine with them popping over and saying 'hey it's late, can you turn it down a bit?' or telling me the next day things went on a bit late or were a bit loud.

If they called the cops on me then decided to drop by the next day to let me know 'hey, that party was a bit loud huh?' I'd be pretty annoyed.

Anyone blasting music at 1am on a Tuesday doesn't need someone knocking on their door to be made aware that they're inconveniencing their neighbours.
Not sure about that. If you've got your stereo system turned up to 11 then chances are it can be heard suburbs away and concern for others is not on your list of priorities.

Other times turning down the volume just a bit can make a difference. I have a surround sound system hooked up to my TV. I can watch a movie or put on one of the Fox music channels through that and crank the volume and it won't bother the neighbours while being plenty loud within my house. Once you get to a certain point the bass starts to reveberate through the walls, the windows will rattle etc. which would give the neighbours the shits.

Back when I was up north I lived in a bit of a party/drug den with 4 other guys and our house started to get a reputation as the hang out joint on Friday nights after the main pub closed. We'd get home about 00.30 and there'd already be 15 people drinking in our front yard, and eventually it got to the stage we'd have up to 40 or 50 people rocking up uninvited.

Inevitably the cops started showing up and after about the third occasion they got called one of them had a quiet word with us the next day that if it happened again we were going to get raided.

They knew exactly what they would find if they did, but they were small town cops who we were otherwise on good terms with, so they were giving us a chance to sort our shit out before it came to that.

So we bought some chain to lock up the front gate and spent the next few Friday nights at home with the lights off and blinds closed. Took about a month to break the cycle before we stopped seeing bunches of people rock up to our gate every Friday night expecting to stroll on in.

Only if you knew they were the ones who called the police.

Anyway, yeah - I'm saying either/or. Put up with it and talk to them the next morning, or if you really need it stopped at the time call the police. I wouldn't be approaching someone in the middle of a party though.

We're talking about a party, not someone watching a movie in their living room. If you've got people over with music blaring at 1am, you know you're pissing people off.

You've never seen drunk people making more noise than they realised?

I think if you let the party goers know its too noicey. It gives them a chance to turn/tone it down a peg or 2 rather than just caling the police straight of the bat or after it gets late.Sometimes they might yeah ok and keep drinking etc if the cops come kinda f**ks up there night. But if they they go f you and turn it up then call the cops and then f up there night. Most neighbours are not saying not to party just get dont tooooo noicey.

Maybe it's because I'm on my phone but I can't see any special provisions relating to different standards applying if your neighbour has kids or works shifts.
Part C — Noise-sensitive premises 1. Premises occupied solely or mainly for residential or accomodation purposes.

Of course, but the most stringent restrictions already apply to all residential properties. The type of property is relevant when applying the regs

The worst I've ever had was the campaigners upstairs from a unit I lived in who liked nothing more than a smoke of waccy tobaccy and the worst music ever (top 40 dance crap) starting up at 2am every Monday.
No problems with them having a smoke, but the music was a serious problem.

I only called the cops once I think (usually others called first), the body corporate a couple of times, but really there was no point. The cops said call the body corporate, the body corporate said call the council.

I expect some noise in cheap flats, but that was way beyond the limit. Pretty much every week for the six or eight months they lived in the place.

Agreed, if it's noisy then make a complaint - you don't need a reason except for the noise itself. Why the hell does it matter if you have kids or not, no one else besides you actually cares, it's no one else's problem that you have kids or have an early start in the morning.

Had a dumb bish FB friend whinging the other day because Council workers started trimming the street trees at 10am and woke up her kids. I mean, seriously?

And I don't mean "It sucks that the kids woke up", it was more like "**** you XXX Council for waking my kids up, how dare you start chainsawing in my street while my kids are sleeping. I should ring up and complain."

Not exactly the same thing, but what are peoples thoughts about my neighbours who complained about smoke from my firepit? I only use it about twice a month.

Live next door to some stereotypical whinging Poms, right Syds they are too, often unreasonably sooking about noise. An example is a party they went to across the road on a Saturday night, they left at 10 and then rang the cops on it when they got home (they also complain about music in the afternoon ). Just goes to show that there's arseholes on both sides of the argument.

But yeah, in this distinct case, I see no issue with making/increasing the volume of noise purely to shit them.

I contain that 3pm in the afternoon is fair game, especially when our direct neighbours never had an issue - It really wasn't that loud -
Agreed, if the old prick doesn't like the noise at that time, he should take a walk.

I'm with Caesar and radiojake in this thread. I really don't have a problem with loud music at 2/3/4am on weekends if it's a couple of times a year type thing for birthday's and what-not. Weekdays, not so much - for the fact that most people will be up for work at the 6-8am range. Petty retaliation is not on, for me anyway. If they were the type of people that were making a habit of playing loud music i would definitely make a point by chapping on their door the next day to express my concern in a civil manner, telling them that i'd appreciate it if they could keep it down after a certain time etc... If they continued being idiots, then i would be going to the police.

While I get where you are coming from, speaking as a bloke with a 2 month old (her kids must be babies if they're sleeping at 10am)....

It can be an absolute prick getting a screaming whinging kid to sleep, and when you do its a godsend. You can finally have a coffee/take a shit in peace. Little things like the council waking them up can be rather annoying. Multiply that by 10 when its a new mum who's survived on 4 hours sleep a night for months.

Tldr, too rational for bf I guess

Mate, no one cares if you have kids or not, why should a neighbour care? It's a massive cop out to say 'I have kids trying to sleep...don't make noise..'. It's as if the parents are saying to the neighbours 'oh it's my kids fault I don't want you to make noise'.

The reality is the kids couldn't care less and the parents are the ones with a problem but lack the courage to admit it, so they blame it on the kids - I have no respect for these people.

That's just really bad luck. 10am is hardly an unreasonable time for council workers to be using chainsaws.
Mate i agree 100%. I'm just putting it into context by saying that a complaint like that is most likely born out of sheer frustration.

The lines between rational and irrational get blurred when you're surviving on minimal sleep. I probably wouldn't post about it on facebook myself, but similar things have happened to us and believe me I've had a fair rant at the wall.

The moral of this story is to get to know all your neighbours including those over the back fence so you can better handle situations like this. No way I was gonna go round alone into an unknown situation with 20-40 drunk people at 1am and no way I was gonna put up with music so loud that it would have seriously matched a nightclub for volume and bass so the Cops got called. It's against the law to do it and the Police are there to enforce the law. I also didn't mention there was a DJ/MC on the mike shouting shit out in between 'songs' too. I am thinking they brought a system around after being out at some event.
Yes it's not anyone's problem that I have kids or that I have to get up for work but the law is there to enforce common decency and if I feel you are going to do something to adversely affect mine or my kids welfare by breaking the law I will make it your problem in the manner to which I chose. Appears as though it kept my eldest awake as I had to leave work early to pick him up from daycare because he was so tired that all he kept doing was crying for his mum and dad so now as well as getting **** all sleep I've had to make up the hours and console a very upset child. Again not their problem but the brick lying on their living room floor next time will be.

My ex-neighbours used to have very late night parties pretty much any day of the week at random frequencies. Thing is my bedroom backs straight onto their entertaining area, and the entire wall is a window so I pretty much get all the sound. I wasn't too fussed as I can get to sleep in a hurricane if I had a kid though I would have no trouble going around and telling them to turn it down or call the cops.
