Is that you, Winnie ?

After tearing up the French submarine deal…. We are left with none available as both the US & UK won’t have any spare production capacity prior to 2040 at the earliest. Although both countries are retiring subs while trying to increase their fleets, which means they are at full capacity. So in practice neither can build us a submarine in the next 50 years. So, we screwed the only other nuclear sub producing country (except Russia) out of a deal, to not actually get a sub. [emoji1751]

This incompetence is truly incredible but certainly not in out of place in the previous government.

Thoughts on the above?

Good Morning, LittleG

The French deal was
(a) conventional only, thus lacking what we really need, abilities to stay submerged and undetected; and
(b) weirdly, the use a nuclear sub design converted to conventional.
Bizarre.

It was a bad deal in the first place, intended to ensure jobs in SA, that's what you get if you cede decision making to blokes like Turnbull. The first thing the French did was to deny production offshore (French shore) and to breach time limits, on what is known, we could have rescinded for breach by France. In hindsight, a possible course might have been to amend the deal to the purchase of French nuclear subs rather than conventional but we are much better off with US technology than European, the RAAF and whichever branch of the military which deals with missiles are practically fully integrated already and let's face it.

Coincidentally, there's an article in SMH this morning on how to accommodate the gap. It postulates construction in Australia but that means developing a domestic nuclear capability, which I'd be in favour of, my reservation being our present Treasurer's claims that nuclear is the most expensive, whilst claiming the renewables is the least.

I read somewhere that Winnie is cracking down on the use of that descriptive. Are you secretly a stooge of 国家安全部 (the Ministry for State Security) ?

Could have changed to Nuclear and actually built a sub.

OR

Best option:
Get the tech from US and build some for us. Then IF they are of a high standard, we could sell them to the US &/or UK. It’s easier to plan to build more than you need from the start, than have a fixed production number.

Note:
I didn’t need the translation but that doesn’t mean I work for that mob.

Pretty neglectful that we have let manufacturing industries die :(
The irony. Given an accepted world order and compliance, globalisation works to make us all prosperous, Xi and Putin kill that so we drift back to internal self sufficiency and economic inefficiencies.

The home of my friend in Keilor East, where I was living in the bungalow, sold for $1.15 million at auction today. Wow! That's just crazy for a 50+ year old three bedroom home. I'm so happy for my friend. She offered the bungalow to me when I told her that I was moving back to Melbourne five years ago. She and her family have been my "adopted" Australian family for 47 years. She turned 85 last month. Too bad that she's a Collingwood supporter. ;)

Liz Cambage and Maria Folau showing bigotry, racism and homophobia are not solely exhibited by males.

Luckily we have Ash Barty, Liz Watson, etc as real role models.

A lesson to be learned from the Manly rainbow jumper fiasco. It emerges that Manly determined to wear a jumper in support of a cause that it knew, or ought to have known, would or might have offended at least 7 of its first choice players, without even consulting them ! Ridiculous. Sporting Organisations are probably the least qualified when it comes to socio-religious issues in a multicultural, democratic society. I don't think our current administration would be as stupid as Manly's and that particular issue isn't controversial in the AFL, whatever coloured bootlaces St Kilda might wear. Right or wrong, acknowledge the Manly 7 for the strength of their convictions. Phrases like "bigotry, racism and homophobia" reflect upon the user.

Could be worse. She could be a Richmond supporter.

Bit of an update on the VUWO grandstand. Made a fair bit of progress already it seems.View attachment 1463071

Not fast enough for Darce - he's nodded off! Also are the Libers reacting to the younger passing wind, seems he's trying to flap the back of his shorts to get rid of an odour, and the old man has held his breath to avoid inhaling. Then again, I may be reading too much into the whole thing...

Yep Darce is at the point of collapse and is leaning on Libba Snr for support.

Classic Neil Mitchell recently - he was asking for calls on most admired athletes and went with Robbie Flower  and .................. James Hird

About a month ago I signed up on myGov to register as an organ donor. Today I received my organ donor card in the mail - exactly 18 years after my father became one. His liver was transplanted into a woman after he was taken off life support after a brain aneurysm. My mum was very proud that we made the choice so someone else could continue to live. She wanted it to be anonymous - a gift to a stranger from our hearts.

He doesn't mind Ben Cousins and Tiger Woods either, lol!!

I hope for his sake that Razor Raynal has booked an early flight out after the Bledisloe Cup match last night.
Our own Monsieur Chamberlain would have been proud of him.

Hmmmm ... maybe we shouldn't have cancelled that submarine contract.

Graham Arnold has heard the pleas and is "playing the kids" in the final warm up game against NZ before the World Cup. Includes 18yo Garang Kuol who hasn't even started in an A-League game yet.

Seems to be having the desired effect: 2-0 up late in the game.

Experience is great but sometimes when the talent is there you just need to let them express themselves before they become scarred with failure and doubt.

Feb 11 , 2019 the deal was signed off on by : Our previous fearless leader S Morrison & C Pyne.
Thought you might have mentioned them ?
Or are they more your people ?

By the way have you at all changed your mind on your mate across the Pacific in any way ?
” Don‘t listen to what he says , watch what he does “ 🤣

That's a 2 month bump, Your Majesty. The Sub deal was first signed in April 2016, under Turnbull. Morrison wasn't elected PM until August 2018. When he signed off in Feb 2019, the deal was that, apart from specialised bits, construction was to take place in South Australia, the point of the deal. I imagine that and advice from his advisers, satisfied him. That subsequently changed and the subs were to be built in France, we could have bailed out then, under default clauses. In retrospect, Morrison should have declined to sign. You have to get over your emotional responses to politicians, most have healthy egos and an over generous dose of narcissism but are just people doing their jobs. No, I haven't changed my mind about Trump at all. He was a good President for Australia
  • the refugee deal
  • exemption from US steel and aluminium tariffs
  • one of only 2 countries to get a State Dinner at the White House, that would be close to your heart, wouldn't it ?
  • confrontation with CCP China. That was a bit more controversial, it might have contributed to China's subsequent economic attack but, at the time, the 7th Fleet hanging around the South China Sea was comforting.

Did you get an invitation to the Royal Funeral ? If not, there's still the Coronation.

I'm glad that the Bulldogs in particular are taking concussions seriously.

Tua Tagovailoa suffered a suspected concussion four days ago and played again for the Miami Dolphins in the NFL. Lo & behold

Everyone involved that signed off on him playing needs to be fired. 2 concussions in five days is life altering shit and they pretended the initial one was a back injury.

That’s ridiculous. You don’t need to be a doctor to diagnose that first concussion. His legs are like jelly! Incredible stuff. Hope he’s alright long term.
