It is interesting now so many NRL players still go to Union like Sonny Bill, Tuqiri and now Nawaqanitawase who led the NRL in tries this year because like it or not, the prestige of winning a RWC > anything in League.

I can only enjoy League in small doses because of how one dimensional it is but Union has the incomprehensible refereeing and the people who run it are ivory tower dinosaurs

I simply can’t stand Union, played a bit and understand the rules but it has been ruined by officiating and kicking the ball out of play.

Went to the Bledisloe at Optus and the first half was the worst display of “sport” I’ve ever seen. It was basically the ref just giving out penalties. Even Kiwi supporters (who really only follow Union) thought it was horrible and it’s not a one-off.

The ref is usually the person dictating the play. Most of the points are either directly from penalties or the result of a penalty kicked out of play. No other sport is so reliant on penalties to score, even soccer scores more from open play.

Ohtani is a freak.

I usually start watching an hour after the is play. Then skip forward 15 seconds after most pitches.

Amazing game! Sports at the highest level is unrivalled for potential drama.

Now they play two more games one the next couple of days. Ohtani will start the game at bat and with the ball in the next game. Truly amazing, generational player.
He definitely won't be hitting another ball for the rest of the series

Not really into baseball but picked the Dodgers as my team so always tune in when they make the playoffs, been an entertaining series so far.

This post right here is exactly why I walked away from Union. I watched the southern hemisphere teams get refed out by northern hemisphere ref's during the world cup. They made it nearly impossible for the Wallabies to win.

I have, on occasion, gone down to a local park (Admiral if anyone knows of it) to watch rugby with a friend who takes an interest in that for some reason and I never can understand the penalty where the teams designated kicker hoofs it over the boundary before they restart with the ball where it crosses the line.

The kicker always seemed to put it over the boundary maybe 15m forward of their position. Why are they not sinking the boot into a banana and curving it away over the line 50m up field? Is there a maximum amount of penalty? It frustrates me so much. There's clearly one guy in the team who does all the kicking so why isn't he plonking it as far as possible to move the game closer to scoring??

It would appear to be the point of difference in a game at suburban level, should the rules allow for someone to barrel the ball away over the line. If their kicker gains 15m a penalty and your side take 50m each time you're going to win.

Please explain to me why this happens??

You can kick it as far as you like. But at that level he may not have the boot to do it.

That team could have a strong backline and the team is built around giving the backs space to move in.

Could be that they have a strong forward pack and want to grinding their way through phases.

Hard to say without knowing the teams plan.

Then my fears are confirmed. What happens if the kick out of bounds doesn't make it out of bounds? What is the risk of trying to kick it too far and failing to clear the line?

Its a pretty straight forward risk reward scenario. Sure your fly half could try and bannana it 35 metres down the right side (if they are a right footer) to get the lineout closer to the try line, but if they stuff it up then its a turnover. The better and more consistent the kicker, the longer kick they can produce that they 95%+ know is going go into touch.

The ball is play if it doesn't go out (boucing over the line it still a lineout to the kicking team, but the oppositin aren't going t allow that very often)

Failing to clear thr line means the ball is turned over.

Kicking it dead (over the deadball line) means they get a 20mtr tap.

When i played 3rd grade over here we had the gameplan to kick it long and then defend until they made a mistake. For the better part it worked and we often got a lot of territory and forced them to kick it long. It also helped we had a flyhalf from NZ that played at a high level and knew how to direct traffic.

Union and league are a game of territory. Similar to the forward press in AFL. Lock the ball deep in your attacking area and apply pressure. Its worse for NRL as you only get 5 attempts then you have to kick it. Union is until you lose the ball with unlimited phases.

Rugby Union is shit.

I can't stand it. Something about the private school rugby snobs that rub me up the wrong way.

Is there a side that gets pumped up like the Wallabies by ex players in the media and deliver SFA.

League has won that war for years here in Australia and the gap is only widening in the pacific islands.
Cool
To each their own, but my view is opposite
Imo, Union is a valid sport, with various intricacies & scenarios, while nrl is a training drill extended way too long so as to induce sleep for anyone watching

Yeah ill have to agree to each their own.

NRL is a great game to watch and even better to play. Union has always felt convoluted with line outs and the endless phases but I prefer their scrums.

Both have their strengths and weaknesses like AFL does.

They're certainly playing like their representing the whole country. That marathon 3rd game seems to have broken the Dodgers.

What was the first Canadian result? - the Oilers lost the Stanley Cup final.
4 nations face-off
Unlike the Oilers the Jays are the only Canadian side in the league

I'm moving Kellaway up the list of cricket talent to be excited about. I'd have him borderline next in line. Seems a real talent and it's starting to come together doing the hardest job in Australian cricket - opening
It's his third first class century and his second first class 50 since he made that big hundred against WA near the end of last season, at least 9+ innings ago.

The hype train is on the tracks but it's a way off arrival at the station.

Couple of 40s though as well this season. Opening is cooked in Australia so any average over 40 over two seasons is pretty exciting for a 22 year old. Im bringing the train into station, get onboard.
