Whoever has to idea to mask Yarran's ice addiction as mental health should be sacked immediately.
Fairly extreme to call for a sacking of someone for applying assessment on someone that is in line with the medical industry consensus? Not sure the idea was to mask it at all, more along the lines of treating the issue in accordance with relevant and current medical processes.

I would be extremely surprised if a decent percentage of the players we hear of with mental health issues (as reported) aren't to do with substance abuse. Personally I'm glad that it gets reported in the somewhat general way it does. The maniacal response from the media is bad enough with vague reports of mental health issues with players. Could you imagine how feral they would get if it were known substance abuse were involved? FMD it would be a bloodbath.

Look I'm just going to say it, even though I know people will howl me down. If his story is true, yarran is an idiot.

That's only because of one part though. He said when he got offered ice, he thought "this will either be just a good night, or it will ruin me." And then he did it anyway. He knew exactly why he shouldn't do it, and he wasn't addicted to ice at that time. Yet he did it anyway.

I hold a different view to that, which I don't expect to be popular.
I have absolutely no real idea on this subject.
But the term " mental disease " is confusing to me.
Do you start with mental issues that lead you to look for a drug as a crutch ?
Or do you develop " mental disease " because you are on a drug ?

I believe it's both.

In the first instance, there is a massive connection between drug addicts and people with existing mental health issues. The statistics on this are pretty clear. So there is usually some form of 'self-medicating' going on as a lot of the time the people with these issues don't have access to or the knowledge of how to get help. The drugs change their mindset in someway and may temporarily relieve the mental health issues being experienced. This then forms a crutch which eventually turns into an addiction.
Additionally I have read of addictive personality types which may mean certain people are more susceptible to addiction. I'm not sure where this sits medically, in terms of being a mental health issue. I'm not sure I necessarily agree with it either but I have read about it. Remember that it's only a percentage of people that do use drugs end up becoming addicts so there must be someone else at play. I think last I saw it was around the 30-40% of Australians have used drugs and I don't believe there's that many drug addicts around.

On the second point, once addicted to a substance an addict's brain is essentially rewired which means they cannot control impulses and other normal brain functions. This rewiring is similar to how other mental illness work hence the assessment of drug addiction being classified as a mental health issue.

I'm not an expert on this by any means, only restating my understanding so if anyone has more in depth knowledge I'm happy to be corrected.

I think both views have some merit. Chicken and egg etc.

Let's not go down this road though for all our sakes.
Think Hans is respectful and level headed enough to have this conversation with. But I agree. Unfortunately not all are. So best leave it at that.

It's interesting and certainly worthwhile but not what I come to a footy page to discuss.

That was my sole point and I meant no disrespect to anyone.

Josh Gibson says Bevo way the main person who made him the player he is.

Also said they're super tight, need to get him working with Cordy, Adams and co next year.

Would be an excellent addition to our coaching stocks even if I disapprove of his hipster tendencies. He's got good taste in dog breeds.

Just as I posted this he said he's going to busy next year launching his own skin cream brand..
Josh seemed to be making a case to find a job in the industry when he was on 360 last night. He did mention his other business interests, but I think he is in the market for a job of some sort.

He mentioned some doing some media stuff, so if he can do that, he has the time to do some coaching as well. Probably comes down to if it is something that interests him or not.

I want to point out that ice use is actually the lowest it's been in nearly 22 years and is declining. It's a moral panic driven by a lot of media outlets. Further to that, most people who use the drug do so recreationally and aren't addicted to the stuff.
That being said it is poison and is highly addictive. I applaud Chris Yarran for his courage and hope he is a role model for all indigenous Australians suffering from the horrible mental illness that is substance addiction.

Rory Atkins with one of the worst non-shepherds you'll ever see. Single-handedly responsible for Lever getting caught HTB in Swans' 50.
