Can someone explain to me why Wildcard Round is Wildcard Round and not just the first round of Finals?

What's the difference?

It doesn't matter what they call it. It's either the first week of finals, the last week of the home and away (6 progress, 8 eliminated after round 24) or something in the middle. All that matters is there's 2 games where there were none and it comes at the sole expense of 7th and 8th not getting the pre-finals weekend off. It applies to every team that finishes 7th and 8th from here, so there's no negative aspect to this decision.

It's not the AFL making a case that the stadium changes things. Peter Gutwein announced it as a the centre of the Tasmanian proposal to the AFL for a team.

The decision on whether there should be a team without a new stadium has already been made. That decision is no. Every independent study has shown a lack of viability.

There is absolutely zero requirement for the AFL to put teams into unviable markets, whether that is Hobart or Townsville.
To be fair a stadium is important for a range of reasons, but a roof? Surely they are just taking the piss

What it does do is ensure that all teams in the 8 host a home final, I can see why the clubs would be on board from a revenue POV. (Assuming there is no contractual BS from the MCC)

'Wildcards' don't even make sense in leagues without divisions where the division winners are guaranteed no matter their record.

These are preliminary elimination finals. PRELIMINATION!
Agree, just call it top 10. They actually had an opportunity to get creative with the wildcard.

It could have been four teams from the bottom ten that had the highest winning percentage of games versus the top 6.

next minute it'll be 16 v 15, 14 v 13, 12 v 11 and the winner of each game gets the lower pick of the two on offer

Maybe throw in some sudden death events

16 vs 15 for draft picks, but the loser has their pick shuffled back to the end of the first round

Oh you were a stinky bad team that finished bottom 4 and you were looking forward to that premium draft pick? Well tough luck, you couldn't win in wildcard round so your whole season is a waste and you get no good pick

Does JHF have an foot injury similar to Will Day?
That's genuinely bad news. Foot issues can derail a career very quickly.

I knew a guy who was a top 10 draft pick, had a really solid first year including Brownlow votes, had stress fractures next preseason and was never the same after. Had the injury multiple times, ended up with rods in his feet and lost any speed he had.
That was end of career.

I love it when Port lose, but that would be a real shame if it happened to JHF. I's rather beat them when they have everyone and no excuses. Much more enjoyable.

Surely a draft lottery isn't far away

I love the idea. Better to have 2 games pre-finals than an entire weekend without footy. Plus 7th and 8th don’t deserve the same benefits of the top 6. A VIC team can finish 8th, get a week’s rest and play home finals all the way to the GF. If it makes it harder for a side like that, then that’s enough reason on its own. 2 extra games is purely a bonus.
Good Point. Hadn't thought of it that way before.

The AFL have made the construction of the roofed stadium a mandatory condition of the Tasmanian team's admittance. They're essentially blackmailing the Tas Govt into building it.

The TAS Govt know they can't afford to build it, and building it makes no sense whatsoever - it's a bad location, too expensive, completely unnecessary, will rarely be filled to capacity, and will never make a positive financial return. However, if they want a team in the competition (which most Tasmanians do), then they have no choice but to build it - because the AFL are extorting them into doing so.
The Tasmanian Government had the roofed stadium as a part of their presentation to get the license.

It was part of the "ignore your studies, we have a plan" proposal.

The AFL is holding them to it, as they ****ing should.
