Can Port win it all?
We are only half way through the season, so a long way to go to see who will time their run. Many teams have played well in 1st half of the season & faded away.

Port will be well placed in the top 4 & even better if top 2 with 1st home final. But pressure will be on given their recent finals record.

I would say they are premiership favourites right now.
I would also hope they have blown their load too early!
Pies on MCG would be hard to beat.

To put it into perspective this time last year, Lions, Dees,Freo and Blues occupied positions 1 to 4.

I dont recall how well they did on Grand Final day.:drunk:

Collingwood at the G will be a big hurdle.

Any other team at AO, and probably the G, in a Final they should beat.

I thought they were in the same rut of flat tracking until they beat Richmond at the G. Yeah Richmond are not great this year. But it is the way they played the width of the ground that impressed me, made me change my mind.

Let's be honest they play a good style of Footy. One that we are not far off from either.

Just wish we could have built the midfield they have. We had more opportunities to do so with bottom 4 finishes. But failed.

The 2018 draft is a big Sliding Doors moment.

If Adelaide had the negotiating ability or want to trade with Brisbane to acquire the Conor Rozee pick Would he be our best mid right now, making Dawson a better weapon in the middle.....

There are four umpires out there.

The point of having the four umpires is to cover more angles. See more of the play to get more decisions correct.

If they don't do that, and I agree with you in this instance they didn't, what is the point of having four out there?

Is that why there’s 4? Wouldn’t it be as much about fatigue management. I wouldn’t have thought that there’d be any more than 2 within a decision making distance when the ball is in the goal square. Plus, the deciding factor here is the goal line itself, how many field umpires do you expect to get a view along that line? If it’s correct that you can’t infringe by blocking a player when the ball is dead, then it would seem to be a bit of a gap in the rules. Really only the goal review could see all 3 variables at the same time.

This is a seriously weak year. Last year's grand finalists have basically imploded, while Melbourne and Brisbane are useless downhill skiiers.

Take nothing away from Port though. If they win it at a hostile MCG they deserve all the accolades they get.
How do you judge a weak year and a strong year? It’s such a pointless assessment to make and impossible to quantify.

Fatigue management?

The game is basically played stoppage to stoppage with the occasional break out play.

And the constant cycle of i50s rebounded out the stopped just outside 50 ie repeat I50s.

Not very often in the modern game you get more then two or three concurrent passages of play ie end to end.

That stopped on the mid 2000s. Before then a lot more end to end free flowing play.

The game is more static now than it ever has been. Majority game time in shiet distance with some bursts.

If Robert Harvey had GPS he would have regularly covered 20 plus km in a game. The GPS era record is just under 19 km. Just 15 km considered top end now.

Isn’t the constant stoppages and decision making part of fatigue?

It's theirs to lose!
Port equal top on the ladder.

Butters running 2nd in Brownlow.

Finlayson coming 7th in the Coleman.

Port should be taking out the trifecta in 2023 anything less than a flag year is a failure from here.

Ken will be coach at Port till at least 2026.
God let's hope so. Very interesting situation over there. Suuuuuurely you can't boot him after he pulls out the longest winning streak in club history? They're making a Semi at the very least, would be a very brave Koch-head to sack him.

The poor diddums have to make too many decisions?

They ain't Public Servants [emoji1787][emoji1787][emoji1787]

It has got to a point where field Umpiring needs to be a full time job.

That will fix a lot of these issues. Become more uniform in decision making and increase their game IQ.

They might be public servants.

why oh why oh why couldn't the dogs have made the same basic skill errors they are making tonight against us. They seemed to hit target after target against us, yet are getting picked off or missing targets by metres tonight...get stuffed dogs

Because the crows didn't pressure them into mistakes like we did. Our elite ball use chopped them to pieces too, just toyed with them.

I hate to say it, but Port are the real deal. They will be there when it matters.
I also hate to admit it, but a lot of it is the work of Hinkley.
We know he is a great player-coach. He loves the relationships etc.
The difference this year is that he is also making the hard calls. He seems to have stopped the gold passes. He's trusting his younger generation.

Think about the moves he made:
Boak out of the team or sub
Wines (a Brownlow medallist) pushed out of the midfield
Captain dropped
Midfield energised by handing it over to the next generation

I don't think we (as a club) would have the courage to make similar moves. Think about it, since the Port game, we have slowly gone away from the kids midfield and have turned slowly to more of the old guard. Despite the clear evidence that Sloane struggles in the first halves of games, we keep playing him in the midfield. We are now back to playing Keays in the middle for significant minutes.
Apart from a small amount of Pedlar, our kids are mainly being kept out of the midfield. Less Rachele, no Rankine and Soligo pushed out.

We have to trust the next generation before we get anywhere.

Its not often that a 19 year old kid comes into an AFL environment and has such a huge impact on a club. The addition of Horne-Francis to Port's list has had an extraordinary and positive effect on the entire playing group. As recently as last year Port looked and played like a team resigned to the fact that they had missed their premiership window and were just playing out games waiting for the inevitable sacking of coach Ken Hinkley. Not now. Something has clicked down at Alberton and it would appear that Port's resurgence has coincided with JHF's arrival. His skill and physicality around the contest is reminiscent of a young Dangerfield and with the right management this kid could become one of AFL's all time greats. Keeping him focussed on football will undoubtedly be Port's biggest challenge as there is still an underlying disapproval of the kid (rightly or wrongly) by opposition supporters and some players who seem intent on getting under his skin. Ports newfound self belief and confidence is growing by the week as it rapidly stampedes towards two home finals and its first GF appearance in 16 years. With JHF's bull like presence at stoppages players like Rozee and Butters are now discovering more time and space to carve up opposition midfields. As a Crows supporter you cannot help but compare our current playing list to that of of our crosstown rival and just wonder where in the hell did we go wrong.
Yeah sure.
