As Checksider says though, the AFL has been willing to just completely disregard this rule for Geelong so I guess it might as well not exist.

it's their to protect against stupidity. There are valid reasons for providing exemptions, Port's would be one of those.

what would be wrong with that? If Dons don't pay enough for North to not excercise their match option and then don't pay up at the trade table,they have every right to grab him in whichever draft he went in.

If they've determined that not making any first-round selections over three years (or whatever it is) is stupid, then that should be it. It shouldn't be a case of "well we did well enough with those picks so it shouldn't matter". Every club that trades out three years worth of first-round picks presumably thinks they've gotten something worthwhile with it.

lots of rules can be exempted following application due to relevant factors. As long as the intent of the rule is upheld, I can't see any concern. Especially not with Port this year, I'm sure more grey area examples will arise. But they traded a first for a 1 year pick 1, that's the same as using it at the draft in outcome as far as I'm concerned.

It's not about how well you do with the picks. 3 years of trading out firsts for nearly done seniors like Gibbs is vastly different to using them to trade in 3 players drafted the prior year.

I don't think I do. I think the end result is 'movement' is just a better way of saying 'paid'. From North's perspective, let's say Dons offer is clear band 2, so they match. Presumably everyone is happy with this, you've posted previously that its encumbent upon the acquiring club to offer large enough to avoid that occurrence. Roos must be able to genuinely use the PSD as a negotiating tool, Essendon must offer enough to them to avoid North or any other club having the draft capital free hit before their turn. Or they select the main draft to eliminate that free hit and hope another club isn't prepared to pay slightly more than the selection they plan to get him at.

If Roos end up with him in the PSD, I see it as a feature of the agreed system, not a flaw.

To do so, his team traded every pick it had in the draft, plus two of its first three picks in the 2000 NFL Draft, for the fifth overall pick, with which it selected Williams."



The 2000 first rounder ended up being #2 overall. Williams was traded after 3 seasons.

Would be fun to see a team trade their whole draft in the AFL...

The original Mega Deal(TM) from last year was vetoed because Port weren't allowed to trade out their Future 1st and 2nd.

To do with matching points. A few years ago, Sydney and West Coast traded picks, Sydney matched the bid with the lower picks, then WC traded the pick back to Sydney.
