They were saying not he radio last night that Geelong told Port not to split their future 1st as they wouldn't accept 1 of the resulting picks. Port went ahead and did it anyway.

So to some degree they were framing Port as acting in bad faith

I get Geelong's position, that the Port pick isn't going to get them a player they want this year. The reality is that ER simply isn't worth a F1 (which could well be a pick 8-12 range) in what's shaping to be a deep draft.

At this point in time I'd be ok to see Geelong get SFA

You'd have to wonder if in hindsight they'd have been better off letting ER go last year? Though I can't remember what Port could've offered then though and can't be bothered looking it up

Was a low 30’s pick last year

Didn’t St Kilda or Freo do this a few years back? Club was pushing for their first rounder and they split it to get multiple deals done. Still all worked out from memory

Yup

National draft picks are worth a lot more than psd

So teams are a lot more reluctant to spend on experienced players

Inconceivable that some would take him with a pick higher than 24 in the ND

Depends on the depth of the draft though. Many people expecting this draft dies out in the 40s/50s. Port aren't planning to be in it anyway. So they may jump on rat with a pick in the draft.

I just don’t get why Port didn’t negotiate prior to trading their F1. It’s like they traded in the picks they think would get it done, and now Geel have said no, they’re up the creek. They could have gotten more than what they did if they held off…

What Port did was very good tactically. They have offered Geelong a fair deal and will walk him through the ND if the Cats don’t accept the offer. And they have a future second to use to help other deals.

Cats have done similar in the past to get multiple deals done

Port have 99% leverage on the deal and will get him. And BZT through the pre season draft if required

Didn’t geelong do that with us? Traded their first at one stage and we were forced to take their scraps.

Yes. They earmarked one of their firsts for Lachie Henderson so couldn’t give it to us for Dangerfield

What a complete F***ing loser David Noble was around the negotiating table

Bent over forwards to accommodate Geelong, on day 1, and then had the temerity to tell People to wait until the end of trade period to judge what else they did

Well Dave, you useless smear of toe fluff it’s been 8 years and your submissive negotiating tactics sucked big time

Paying massive overs for Hampton who wasn't even in the best 22 for a lowly GWS side was a real head scratcher also. Mad Dog Mackay was ten times the footballer he was.

We were submissive, nice doesn’t cover it

We were a culinary wildebeest making a nice red wine sauce for the Lion to eat us with
But hey we did get dean gore, not all was lost!

I think its kinda beautiful that Port f**ked up this way, Port will be in a state of rebuild after the 2024 season and already behind the 8 ball in terms of draft picks.

Lets not forget, Ken could be sacked and it will result also them losing a player or two to Vic Clubs like a Butter or Lord.

It would be a first round pick. He's not a first round talent.

It is increasingly sounding like geelong told them that their F1 is what Rat is worth and is what geelong will be asking for..

not only that.. geelong told them this for weeks or possibly months in advance..

and the arrogant flog Chris Davies decided that the best course of action would then be to trade their F1 (which they did in a deal that was just horrible value for them) and then turn to geelong and say “sorry, F1 is now gone, you can have the 23 we got with it”.. thinking geelong would simply accept that.

its backfired massively..

suck sh*t to them. Port need to learn that not everyone is gonna put up with their scummy behaviour..

you realise we deployed the exact same tactic when offering up our firsts for pick 1 whilst negotiating with swans for Dawson.

We were bluffing.. we knew north were never accepting our offer for pick 1..

Port didnt even bother to bluff… they just stubbornly went through with it on day 1, two hours into the trade period..
