This is exactly what infuriates me about the "state of the game" BS. In 2016 and 2017 they were celebrating how even the comp was. This year they suddenly hate everything because the ratings slid as they f****d up the fixtures.

Gil came out today and said rule changes are happening next year whether you like it or not and they won't bother trialling them first. The ridiculous thing is that if they just made sure that Friday night games featured mostly the top 8 teams from last year, then the ratings would be fine, as they would mostly be good contests between good teams. Eagles finished 6th last year (after finals) and have 1 fri night game for the season. Why the hell are Carlton, St Kilda and bulldogs even on one Friday fixture, yet alone several each?

The sad (or hillarious) thing is, the rule changes will drastically alter the game and will probably turn a lot of people off football. I can see a massive about-face and apology happening mid season when the fans abandon the game. Hopefully it results in Gil resigning and a clean out of the AFL exec.
Surely you have to admit the game as a general rule has become so congested which IMO is not good from a spectators point of view - the game does need opening up somehow.

I don't have an issue with it when the better teams play each other but I agree that it can get pretty awful when two bottom teams face off. I think it's more tactical though and the style will evolve over time.

If you want to implement rule changes, I'd start with paying more free kicks for illegal disposal when tackled as a gentler way of opening the game up. I think zones are too drastic to implement without a decent number of trials first, so I'd be leaning on a state league to implement it for next year and make a decision for AFL in 2020.

All kinds of yes.

Incorrect disposal is really shitting me these days. Blatant throws and dropping the ballgoing by unpunished. What's the point in bringing in new rules when the current ones aren't being administered correctly by the umpires?

It makes our win against the pies look even more meritorious. Mihochek has suddenly transformed into a superstar.

I would be quite happy if the top 4 could end up as Tigers, Eagles, Pies and Power. You could pretty much book us a GF berth against Tigers with that - Pies and Port are massive pretenders.

Sydney and GWS are the two teams that could do some damage if they sneak into 4th.

North's finals chances look slim, Adelaide or Hawthorn should take their spot. Their depth is rather ordinary
