My Dad said at the time that he was sick of winning and it was too easy. Guess he picked the right side to follow if he didn't like winning lots.
No joke, this is the reason that a few family friends gave to me in the 90s when they jumped ship as well.

Ive always found it weird when people say they "got sick" of their side "winning too much". My mum started barracking for whoever was playing against the Australian cricket team in the late 90s for the same reason.

If West Coast won the next 20 premierships im pretty sure I would enjoy being an inaugural supporter of the most successful AFL team in history, not mope about how my team "wins all the time" so its "boring".

It's weird isn't it, why not just enjoy it? I wonder if any of them regret their choice, seems like they probably do but realise they can't go back so they have to double down and be even more floggish about supporting their team

. If Subiaco had become an AFL side in 95 I woulda left the Eagles . Pretty sure Claremont or any Wafl team fan woulda . WAFL was strong still so its easy to see the Sth and East Freo jumping on board Dockers.
I genuinely embraced a second WA side . I used to support both sides but I never had expectation that Freo would go far . They were a good underdog team to watch play other sides . I think it was a young Ben Cousins getting hurt in a derby that sparked a separation . I was genuinely shocked by animosity and hatred of many Freo supporters .It had worn on me so much I couldnt stand the crappy way they supported . Its like this culture grew amongst themselves that attracted more wierdo like fans . Honestly I would be embarrassed if they were Eagle fans so its kinda good they attract the crap . Now I cant stand them , I didnt want to feel this way but there it is .
Bit like you with Freo did not mind them at first. Then went to a Derby and my opinion changed real quick. Their supporters are as bad as Collingwood and the filth that comes out of their mouths and the women are worse than the men

To me this is the marketing genius of Schwab. He just turned it to us and them. Prior to that Freo were the kind of second team that not many people cared about. A leftovers team with not much going for it and then Schwab came along and said "We have to beat that team and also I heard they all said bad things about your mothers" and it generated this hatred from nowhere that couldn't be explained at the time.
