Wow.

You just know the AFL is trying to avoid a "Fyfe Brownlow" situation.

I guess the precedent is there now - anyone fronts the tribunal for a late elbow to the head, play the Gazza tapes.
But the tribunal ignores precedent.

It's a mickey mouse body purely there to deliver the AFL the most profitable outcomes.

Didn’t think there was anything Ablett hit personally.

Looked like he was trying to soften the contact so careless and a fine is about right.
Thought Michael Christians grading as intentional was off the mark - it was pretty sloppy from Ablett but not for one moment did I think he intentionally tried to hit Shiel

He’s lucky that he didn’t hit him flush and cause more damage because it was reckless. Comes back to the AFL putting too much weight on the outcome and not enough on the potential to cause injury

Outcome based tribunal continues to be a farcical approach. Off the ball shots to the head are all clear provided nobody gets badly hurt.

Never mind that the exact same hit could have vastly different results if it connects 1cm apart, let’s just continue to allow people to hit high but make sure to crack down super hard once a year. Well done AFL.

My issue with fines is that they are so low as to be pointless and to my knowledge aren't adjusted for individual player earnings.

Suspend them or just call them out as very naughty boys and tell them not to do it again, because that's essentially what they're doing at the moment.

I think that is the thing. Gaff deserved his 8. The missed shots deserve 3 or 4. Would cut it all out in half a season

100%.

Jumping and connecting with the head, whether intentionally connecting high or not, is a recipe for someone getting concussed or a broken jaw/cheekbone. Stamp it out.

I don’t wish for anyone to get injured, but I think the coverage of an identical incident in which the recipient wound up with a broken jaw would be fascinating.

Accidental contact by Ablett with no injury of any kind. Sure he jumped but reckon it was an attempt at a spoil. Right outcome

Yeah, I said pretty much the same thing yesterday.
It was pretty obvious to me that there was plenty of detail that would go in Ablett's favour on this one. I get why the MRO goes by a basic formula, and I get why he got off too. I actually don't have a problem with how this incident went. To me it is just a case of the system doing its job properly.

If others see it differently mostly on the basis of thinking that Ablett is a tool and therefore wanting the worst possible outcome for him, then I completely understand and respect that too.

A spoil? Shiel had kicked the ball already
Not sticking up for Garry for a second, but it’s clearly not his best work - it’s was either a poor excuse for a spoil or a poor excuse for karate, either way nothing happened to Shiel he got his free kick which was about all it warranted. It was a late clip for sure, dumb / reckless whatever and high but only worth a fine. I hope if this happens to one of ours we get the same treatment

I think the problem is most folks feel like the tribunal works mostly on star rating. Same offense - Gablett on anyone, thrown out. No Name player on Shiel - weeks. No name player on No name player - 1 week.

Leaping off the ground and raising your arm is a poor way to try and minimise the impact. Gablett had committed, couldn't pull up and was going to give away a late contact free - this happens. Sometimes you go in hot thinking you can get there in time to impact the disposal but you misjudge it. Wrapping Shiel up with his arms while trying to slow down would have been a lot safer. Same free kick conceded but the chances of elbowing the opponent in the head is basically zero.

Have no issue with Geelong playing home finals at their dung heap should they earn that right. It’s actually how it should be. The problem I have is with this :

Cook confirmed he believed the AFL’s position will be to have the Cats host a final at the MCG unless they were to play an interstate side.

That’s just ****ed - you either play it at Kardinia Park for any team or not at all. Finances should never take precedence over fairness but that’s the way the “not for profit” AFL rolls
