It isn’t the outer sack that ruptures, it’s the ball itself, it splits like an egg and leaks fluid. Doctors check blood flow is good and if the outer sack is okay they clear the s**t out. If the ball is majorly disformed or damaged they’ll remove it and put a prosthesis in.

Good read here about the first game played in Brisbane, interesting to see the WWE/VFL were trying to manipulate results even back then.

Knowing that Brisbane would be the toughest nut to crack in trying to sell the game, the league had not only sent up the two best teams to play in front of the Queenslanders, but they’d played some selection games that the Geelong players believed to be underhanded.
