So does 10th mean a finals appearance in terms of stats?

Imagine Essendon finishing 7th/8th and winning their wildcard matchup only to be told it isn’t actually a final. So the days without a finals win count marches on

I hate it for integrity of the league, but as a current cellar dweller, it makes "jumping" up to finals much more achievable. If we don't at least finish 10th by 2027 I'll be very disappointed. Hell, good early momentum next year and I figure it's an outside chance.

10wins probably gets you 10th most years. Win 7 of your hime games and 3 away and you're there.

Everything I feel about this announcement has already been said. What a diabolical year for the league and it's fans. Rugby League and whatever soccer Australia is called right now but be high-fiving each other watching this absolute train-wreck slowly occur.

The only saving grace from this will be the hilarity of watching 7th or 8th lose their spot in the finals to 9th or 10th, and really only if it's Freo.

Looked it up out of sheer curiosity. This is the wins and % for 10th place each year since 2016

2025: Sydney- 12 wins, 97.0%
2024: Fremantle- 12.5 wins, 111.9%
2023: Adelaide- 11 wins, 116.8%
2022: St Kilda- 11 wins, 99.3%
2021: St Kilda- 10 wins, 91.5%
2020: GWS- 8 wins, 95.6%
2019: Port- 11 wins, 105.4%
2018: Port- 12 wins, 107.6%
2017: Bulldogs- 11 wins, 97.1%
2016: Port- 10 wins, 106.0%

2020 was the Covid year and only 17 games were played
2023 onwards there’s been 23 games instead of the usual 22

I think 11 would be the baseline required now and more likely you’d need 12 - only 3 years where a less than 50% W/L has reached 10th. Two of those where 2020/21 that were covid compromised seasons

Yeah, so what, the 7, 8, 9, 10, whoever wins, now have to play 5 weeks of final if they are to win a flag?

Outrageously stupid. Of all the ridiculous things the AFL have attempted in the past 10 years, this may just be the biggest of them all.

Most years the final round has some games which have finals ramifications for the winner/loser. Is that not enough?

Money hungry AFL just trying to squeeze every penny out of the broadcasters

If it weren't for West Coast, I think I would be done

Opening round is right up there...but yeah, this adds absolutely nothing to the game

Imagine when an integral player to a team does an ACL in 7th vs 10th and misses the entire next season. Let's hypothetically say Ben King vs 10th placed Sydney this season just gone. That's GC's forward line completely farked for 2026.

I mean, that could happen in their final game of the season anyway even if they're out of contention.

-9-10 - 5 solid weeks of travel. 2 more games than the week one winner. Rule out any non vicco team even considered a possibility. It's for a Melb team to get a lucky run only of maybe only having to play one game out of Vic.

It's also, one less week preseason for the teams in the Wildcard round in the following year.

If I'm west coast or Freo and finishing 9-10, I would be sending the WAFL team over. **** it, you ain't winning shit. And if they do, then the league team has had a week off and can hit the finals proper just like any other of the top 6.

See what the AFL would think of that

Came to the realisation its a clown league quite a few years ago so at this point I just find it all quite amusing

Love the sport so I'll always watch the elite level but knowing its WWE type entertainment more and more than a serious sport
I'm with you Joshy. I haven't seriously followed the league post-Covid, from about the time the Eagles weren't allowed to train because other clubs had lockdown restrictions.

Nothing from AFL HQ has changed my mind ever since.
