Not really, the Aussie team won't be losing by 104 so it won't be anything like Freo

Kinda expected there to be more than 18 players in the squad, there were 22 players 2 years ago. Probably have even less interest in it now, but at least we're not risking injury to any of our players I suppose.

It's a radical idea but I wonder...would it be a good strategy for GC and Brisbane to solely use their first few draft picks each year on Qld players?

They might not get the same level of talent with their picks but at least they would have a better chance at maintaining a consistent squad and could focus on developing that team rather than constantly having to expend energy on trying to retain "homesick" players.

It also might help develop the capacity of Qld junior footy, as the pathway to elite sport will become more achievable and more kids might start taking it seriously.

I don't know what is worse: having an uncompetitive side made up of local kids, or having an uncompetitive revolving door of highly rated interstate kids and an overworked list management team pushed into overdrive each year

I was thinking similarly. They have excellent currency in draft picks, and could turn them into a whole slew of Barlow/Lyons solid citizens, plus kids with minimal go-home factor. They might not be A-grade type players, but you'd at least get some consistency into the squad, and the big clubs won't be continually circling to get them.

Freo lucked out in 2013 because of the conditions of grand final day, it was windy and swirly, suiting Freos game style and hindering Hawthorns precision style. The game would have been over at half time had the weather been fine and sunny. Remember to bring that up to freo fans when they occasionally bring up how they lost their GF by less than us.
