I wouldn't write Schache off as a bust yet, although it seems like the Lions have

Was interesting reading Mick McGuane's analysis of him and why he never rated him.

On potential The Dogs have a great forward duo in Boyd and Schache, then of course we're still waiting for Jarrod Waite to live up to his potential.

There are serious issues with keeping talent (especially Victorian..) at interstate clubs. A lot of players basically ransoming their club and asking/begging to be traded back home - because of homesickness/bigger contracts put in front of them.

People can talk all about free agency and how this is good for the sport and how loyalty in the AFL to one club is disappearing.. but this is only helping Victorian clubs who continue to reap the rewards from homesick players, who are then traded for a pittance.

I realise they desperately need some seniority, professionalism and leadership in their playing group, but are the Lions mad giving Hodge 2 years? He looked cooked this season, I can't imagine he'll be doing much more in 2019 than arriving late to every contest and belting someone to compensate.

Seriously? A two year contract? Surely a one year with one year coaching possibility, right?

If a straight two year playing contract - madness. The Queensland clubs are f***ed.

How bent over were GC today? Giving in to the Ablett and Freo demands.

Geelong must think they're one 33 year old midfielder away from a premiership. Won't help their shitty forward line.

Brisbane will be an interesting side next year. No Rockliff or Schache but gain Cameron who is a huge get, and Hodge. I feel that the young backline will benefit greatly from Hodge marshalling them.

We gave Mitchell a 4 year contract which was up to him how long he'd play vs coach. I would imagine Hodge's contract would be similar.

I actually think this is more about retaining players. Hodge has reportedly got a massive desire to win, and was very good at bringing new people into his culture which formed the Hawks into a very tight knit player group. Admittedly they are a Melbourne based club but there were very few young players who wanted out, moreso those that left were convinced of the need for more opportunity and brokered in trade that was advantageous to the Hawks.

So Fagan is probably thinking of Hodge as a fix for drafting a kid with pick #2 and selling him 2 years later for a 2nd and 3rd rounder - someone to keep Cam Rayner or LDU in Queensland.

Wtf, how's Weller worth anywhere near pick 2, let alone a top 4 pick:huh:
He's not... but he was probably worth more than pick 19.

Thing is with GC, they're haemorraging players, and here's a well rated bloke who actually wants to come and play for the club, so they pay overs because they have a couple of firsts next year, and had a couple of firsts the year before. I think GC assessed this years draft and decided the top rated kids were less likely to stick around, which lessened the pick value for them and made it OK to trade on.

Gold Coast also have two extra second round picks in 2018 plus an extra third round pick in 2018 to go with WCE 2018 first Round pick ...if GC can survive through the 2018 season then they should have a very productive draft in November next year .

Hodge will be invaluable to the Lions. They arent about to challenge, it's not about wins and losses for them. He is effectively a coach out on the ground, and his role will be to teach, direct, lead by example, protect the kids. Establish good fundamentals then step into the coaches box and take it the next step. I like the move.

I predict hodge will be involved in some sort of off field incident.
Maybe late to training ,maybe drunk driving

Haha yeah..."You mean we can hit the town and get on the piss and no-one cares who we are?...oh boy I should have "retired" and come up here earlier"

I'm looking forward to reports of Tex Walker having a stern chat to Bryce Gibbs around having the temerity to switch clubs mid contract. Will Gibbs be excluded from the Crows BnF next year?
After his GF performance Gibbs has every right to ask him to handover the captaincy
Talk the talk and you have to walk the walk
