Hawks looking vulnerable this year.

If we win tomorrow (I know, I know), we'll be second behind Freo.

If we lose ... out of the top 8 completely. Going to need to beat a couple of teams close to us (Adelaide, Collingwood, Richmond in particular) to sneak into the 8 this year.

Hawthorn won premiership. We beat GWS. GWS beat hawthorn.... Therefore we will win the premiership this year.... I think that's how it works

Also known as the 2006 argument.

Wonder if GWS will end up being around the same finishing place as us. We'll win at least one of the 2 Adelaide games , bookmark it :)
Shame we play Collingwood and Richmond away and not at home , especially Collingwood!
On the plus side , we play Essendon at home but not away ...
I'm nervous about the Cats game in a few weeks (thankfully it's in Perth but I still think we will lose )

Have Freo ever been outright premiership favourites in their history? Will probably be just that come Monday morning. Interesting to see if they can handle it for five months...

I think they are peaking too early TBH.

They look a million bucks now, but how are Pav, Sandi, Walters, Ballas, etc going to be feeling come round 23? Furthermore, full-strength Freo have only beaten Port and Sydney (who were carrying injuries at the time) by less than 10pts playing in Perth - hardly convincing. Outside of those two, they've beaten us, a washed-up Geelong, Melbourne and hot-and-cold Essendon.

Ive still got a feeling we'll be watching a Hawthorn/ Port GF this year, with the Teal's taking the title. Dont get me wrong, Freo are easily Top 2-3, but they arent the world beaters the media are currently fapping about.

I actually hope Freo win this year! Hawks/Sydney have won enough recent flags . Port and North are my second picks (but North especially look back in the pack so far this year ) but I don't particularly like either of them ....

Sorry but you need to go stick your head in a microwave on high

I don't like freo

Nothing personal against you ;)
Why? Default rivalry hate ? Their supporters ? I like Freo more than some other clubs . Pity about some of their supporters who still have chips on their shoulders , and a few players like Ballantyne and Crowley. I have always liked Pav and McPharlin though and I do like Fyfe.

Basically , I just like Freo more than any other of the other 2014 top 6 teams other than Geelong (who have also won too many flags). If other teams like Adelaide/Pies/GWS/WB surprise us and maintain their early form though, I'll be supporting them over Freo but they wouldn't be realistic chances anyway.

Truth be told, our desire for avenging 2005 and our general finals experience of seasons prior would have put us in good stead to win a potential derby grand final. We'd have smeared them from pillar to post, much like we should have done against Sydney in the eventual GF (but in true Eagles fashion we left them in the game for a spirited comeback).

Got to disagree with you here. What you said described their last year perfectly, were they were fighting so hard after an average start to secure top 4, and their guys just hot knocked out in straight sets. If they keep tracking like this up until round 18 ish they're a good chance of making top 2 and then they can rest some players.

The injury comment is a bit silly really, I mean last year they just lost to Port in the semi without McPharlin and Johnson. Injuries are part and parcel and free and hawthorn are probably the best two teams at covering for them.

If they win the premiership, so be it. It's the media bullshit afterwards that I won't be able to cope with. I feel sick thinking about it.

If they win the premiership then Pavlich gets outed as a huge drug addict, Fyfe goes home to Victoria and their club completely falls apart. That's how it works right?

Wouldn't that be nice!

You mean the way the Hawks handily covered for Hodge and Lewis yesterday? Oh, wait.

Injuries to key players at the wrong time will always bring you undone. Freo have not had a particularly great run with injury over the last few years - the worm was bound to turn at some point.

Hawthorn have played without hodge and Gibson and a few different fullbacks for extended periods of time and won premierships. I mean of course season ending injuries to key players will derail a season but all premiership teams (apart from Sydney who don't seem to have as many injuries to key players) will have to cover losses of key personnel for periods of time during the year and still get the job done. Don't think it's really fair to account port and Sydney's losses against freo to injury.

Pretty much any loss and we fall to 9th on percentage behind Port and Hawthorn. Would have to be a beating for the ages to fall lower than that though.

What are you talking about? We are nine percentage points ahead of Hawthorn 48 percentage points ahead of North and 49 percentage points ahead of Port. If Port beat us we will drop to eighth and they will only go ahead of us because they will have four wins and we will have three wins, but we should still be ahead of Hawthorn on percentage, as long as we don't lose by more than 12 goals.

What I noticed last night was that mayne , Walters , spraydem balintine and even tabener were moving all the way up past centre wing creating extra men at stoppages . Then some freo mids push back into defensive 50 creating extras there also . When they got possession all the forwards would run back to goal as hard as they could while pav and resting ruck would keep space in between . ( version of pagans paddock ) but with a couple of forwards near goals
You can't drop spare men back to fill this space but freo will just keep you turning it over in your forward 50 when your then under manned up the ground .
Unless your the hawks with precision kicking you will eventually turn it over if you try run it out by hand or kick to a contest .
As you can see this massive work rate can't be sustained for 4 qtrs but the damage is usually already done.
If you can weather the storm and be within 20 Pts going into the last you could be in with a chance .

**** I hate Pagan's paddock style game plans.
