I see Geelong as quite different to Richmond or some of the other clubs who are constantly poaching players from interstate (especially from GWS and Gold Coast). The only two really good players on their list who came from interstate are Dangerfield and (the only one from one of the "rabble expansion clubs") Cameron. Their list is mostly guys who they drafted and developed along with a handful of players who they got at very good value because they weren't doing much at their former clubs (or someone like Tyson Stengle, who they basically threw a lifeline to and this year he was All Australian). I give Geelong a huge amount of credit because it seems like every year they look like they're getting too old and they should have to rebuild soon, and every year they're in the hunt for top 4 because they draft and recruit incredibly well and play a very good system. Whereas Richmond definitely have taken more advantage of GWS and Gold Coast (although it should be said that this is not a magic bullet; Essendon and Carlton have poached lots of players from the expansion clubs and haven't played finals in a long time).

Our biggest problem right now is that our drafting and our player development have been rubbish recently. There are plenty of good players being drafted out of the WAFL to clubs interstate, but some of those guys are probably going to be less keen to come home and play for the Eagles (like Yeo, Cripps, etc) because it doesn't look like the Eagles will be good anytime soon.
I dont know. Geelong has had quite a few imports.

Dangerfield
Cameron
Rohan
Stengle
Stanley
Dahlhaus
Smith
Higgins
Ceglar

All currently on the list. They also recently had Henderson, Jenkins, Steven and our very own Scott Selwood. Gablett came back too.

I bet you thought 2011 would be a clusterf***, yeah?

Things change very quickly in this business - not saying this side will make top 4 next year, or even finals or even be competitive, period - but saying that in 2024 we are guaranteed to be s**t is just your opinion.

Richmond could only make elimination finals for three years in a row then finished bottom 4 in 2016...again, not saying we will be Richmond, but did you also completely write off for the next few years after 2016?

More than ever nowadays, with the competition so even the primary driver of success is a winning game plan and the personnel to stick to a winning game plan, and you just need a few key players to come on.
Yep - Collingwood is exhibit A for this. Finished second last with an aging list viewed as having little talent, now playing for a spot in a prelim on Saturday.

Yet even in that garbage year of 2010 we managed to win twice as many games as this year with a list that would arguably give this years list a pretty decent hiding… in 18 months this team has managed to only manage 4 wins and had a percentage this season of 23% worse of than that spoon winning year…

Even wiping that where is the improvement coming from? The old blokes are cooked , the middle group doesn’t have much in it and we are thinking a kid who hasn’t played for three years and others who aren’t even on the list at this point.

Were the players aware of this when they bid farewell to their families/loved ones today?
Will the families be flown over at some point, I mean they are a shoo in to get to the grand final right 🙄
And I trust they (Fremantle) will be paying for the whole thing and not asking the AFL for assistance.

Apparently loved ones were heard saying "see you in two weeks" or something like that when they were at the airport today which led to the rumour on twitter.

COVID didn't exist that year.

The point is that things are never as bad as they seem (the corollary also applies). We could spend the next 7 years in the wilderness like 2014-2021 Freo, sure - but it would take a brave man to pencil in no finals until 2025 given our track record. Just need to nail a game plan, a draft or two, and a handful of fringe players to come on, as with every premiership winning side in the AFL era.

Oh well we can forget the whole year then because for a few weeks we had players miss with covid.

2019- didnt happen because of rioli
2020- didnt happen because of the hub
2021- didnt happen because of covid and hubs
2022- because of covid.

Wow we are still premiers from 2018

Don't know why I bother discussing things with you, should have learnt my lesson from months ago.

Not going to clog up this thread, let's discuss more #flagmantle

I think the club still thinks they're reigning premiers.

That's why it takes us 12 years to get near it

Anyone who wants to watch Andrew Embley stub his toe into the ground late in the 4th quarter when we were certain to kick a goal if he remotely got the ball 30 metres to the three eagles players goal side can relive the moment thanks to afl.com..

Was at the game on the defensive 50 in-line with embley, looked downfield to see the free eagles blokes and thought certain goal only to look back and see the ball going into the pies forward pocket. .what a memory.

That killed our momentum, I was sure we'd run over them had that not happened, I've never been so angry after a game.

Calling bullshit that you were ever optimistic enough to think we were certain to kick a goal

Didn't freo finish top in 2015?

My blood still boils at the thought of this game.

That moment was probably the closest I’ve ever gotten to throwing the remote through the TV

Lol - you are being deliberately negative. Here are just a few areas that could easily improve next year:

-Our preseason fitness is not destroyed by a COVID outbreak
-a new gameplan is implemented
-players can actually get on the field: Allen, Sheed, Gov, Yeo, Chesser, Cole
-Young guys keep improving: Hough, Bazzo, Edwards x 2, Culley, Williams

Looking at that list, It seems impossible not to show improvement. 2022 really was a perfect storm.
