Crowd was dreadful. Living in Vic I’ve been to plenty of eagles home games and Melb games in Vic. The difference between the crowd at Optus against Adelaide and the game last night was unbelievable, I was at both the 2 games mentioned. The number isn’t the problem, it’s the lack of supporting or getting behind their team

Agreed. Was in Melbourne for the week on work and took the extra day to see this match.

Despite easily being outnumbered 70-30, it was the Lions fans that made more noise throughout the game.

Melbourne completely lacked any kind of forward target. I have no idea what the instructions were for B.Brown, but considering he is the only thing close to a full forward they had, it was odd that he spent most of the match playing very high up the ground where offensive impact would be limited. That said, his presence was minimal when he did get forward anyhow.

As a result, Melbourne only looked threatening when they were able to get out from the front of the stoppage and Brisbane couldn't generate a defensive spare.

Second half showed potentially the template that other clubs will follow for years to come:
  • Oppose M.Gawn like a defender rather than a ruck, tag and take away his marking power.
  • Counter C.Oliver with an opponent that can ragdoll him - after getting monstered by J.Berry a number of times, it was telling to see Oliver looking to the umpire rather than the ball.
  • Move possession fast at every opportunity, as S.May and J.Lever leave a massive amount of space behind them that can be exploited.

Melbourne should have finished this match inside the first half, but their forward line was impotent and Brisbane hung in there as they did last week against Richmond and rode home with run and momentum.

Some further thoughts:
  • L.Neale is carrying Brisbane. Is everywhere. For someone that covers so much ground, the composure he has by hand at contests is just freakish.
  • J.Berry showed just how high his potential is when played in the right position.
  • E.Hipwood is starting to look like a genuine key forward.
  • Brisbane have so many good one-on-one players in their forward half - when they get the ball into attack quickly and provide those players with one-out opportunities they look exceptionally dangerous.

Interesting times ahead for the Demons however - in just one year since losing D.Burgess they have gone from being the standout four-quarter running team in the competition to the worst 4th quarter performance dropoff of all clubs in 2022.

Conditioning matters.

Maybe on the scoreboard. The ball wasn't bouncing our way but we looked in it, in my opinion. Freo look a fair bit off it right now, but it's early days.

Pies seem to be running and gunning more flat out than usual. Might burn out.
Freo are off the pace and over using the ball - the Pies are not the Bulldogs who scraped into the 8

Freo have been getting inside F50 often enough but their entries have been dogshit. Just dropping it on blokes heads

Clean those up and they’re back in the game
