Heard a suggestion on the radio about having laser beams pointing directly up from the top of goalposts in order to eliminate contentious calls like tonight's, or Anthony Rocca's from the 2002 GF.

Yes. Goalposts with frickin' laser beams!
I was literally about to suggest it!
But then I was worried it might just signal the aliens

A contentious umpiring decision goes against Richmond late and they lose a close one?

Surely we can just add another 5 metres to the goalposts at AFL grounds? Obviously, stability becomes an issue but I'm sure that can be worked out easily enough.

For the record, a quick Google tells me they are 15 metres in height.

Loser of Dees/Swans will be watching and then planning for the Winner of Cats/Pies. They will destroy Brisbane.

Neither Sydney nor Melbourne will allow Neale to drag Brisbane over the line.

Was very surprised the Lynch 'goal' was overturned. Not cos i thought it was a goal. Just that when the ump called it a goal there had to be definitive evidence to over turn, you cant tell me any of the angles they had were definitive.

Also i dont go with the player reactions, they mean diddly squat. Seen enough cricket were no one appeals a clear nick, then appeal and be convinced a fresh air swing was out not to care about reactions.
Each angle on it's own is not definitive. But add the 3 angles together and triangulation means you can be definitive. 3rd umpires would almost certainly have training in how to interpret multiple angles I reckon. Still agree it's far from an ideal system, but in this case the correct call was made I think.

EPL goals are a fraction of the size, would cost hundreds of millions if you wanted to be able capture Lynchs shot at every ground.
Yeah not the same system per se, more that the AFL has to look to other systems to improve what we currently have.

At the very least cameras that show more than one pixel would be great.

Would be good at night games you could have a laser show run from the goal posts..

There’s was a video posted here a while back of some Richmond troglodyte with definitive proof that the game was rigged against Richmond

Wonder how he’s doing tonight

Isn't the ARC reviewer Michael Christian? I don't think he's had training in anything more complicated than tying his shoelaces.
Easiest decision he’s ever made

Found it

This might be the reason god invented YouTube.

Doubt he’s gonna be happy

I just watched last 2 min on the AFL website.
They cut to dimma and the Richmond song started playing.
Chefs kiss trolling.

I wonder whether Hipwood will get suspended for sling tackling Daniel Rioli’s head into the ground. A free kick was paid.
Tim Kelly got a week for something less but I don’t expect Hipwood to get suspended.
He might have been if Brisbane had lost. The AFL/VFL, you can’t beat them can you?

Wouldn't even need lasers.
Cameras, each about the size of a C Cell battery, mounted either side of the goalposts about half way up (or at the top of the fat bit), pointing vertical.

Do you have vision of the one you mention. The one I remember had Rioli keeping his head forward towards his chest and his shoulders hit the ground in the sling but his head didn't.

Edit - I thought during the sling his head was going to hit, but it didn't.

Just saw the Lynch shot for the first time.

Was a behind. You'd have to be incredibly biased (ie a Richmond supporter) to think otherwise - all three angles clearly showed the ball going over a portion of the post, which is conclusively a behind and enough to overrule the goal umpire. Brian Taylor going on about 'you need conclusive evidence not just Lynch's reaction' is another in the long list of NFI things he says in his commentary.

Seems a certain Richmond poster that comes to the board to like posts after we lose games is back to disagree with posts after a completely deserved loss - doubt a coach will be required though.

Hope they're not taking the loss too rough. 🙂

Unbelievable that anyone could think that was umpired in Brisbane’s favour, other than the weird score review.

Rest of the game was all Richmond. There’s no wonder they give away the most amount of frees, they’re constantly pushing the limits of what’s acceptable, particularly guys like Vlastuin and their arm chops/tunneling.

So it couldn't have been say one centremetre behind the goal post as it traveled past? I would argue the only angle that could confirm that would be from directly underneath. The angle the goal umpire had i might add.
The goal umpire wasn't in the best position.

Basically the afl rule that the goal umpire has to make an on field call when they have NFI (it happens, very hard when a guy is kicking from 5m out to move fast enough to get in a good position for a shank) is the problem.

Lucky we didn't have ARC for this then

The thing I love the most about that footage is the cut to ballantyne celebrating a goal, then they show it hit the post and cut back to him on the floor.

I was watching it at a pub surrounded by Freo supporters and when Balla celebrated they all thought they'd won. I put my head in my hands, only for a lone Eagle supporter to run up to me to celebrate the behind as the rest of the pub went quiet. I went from devastation to Euphoria in 3 seconds and the Freo fans the opposite!
