5/6 for me. I picked St. Kilda over the Eagles.

People might talk about how good the umpiring was on Friday, but in my view it was shithouse. Made crap players able to get away with a lot of bullshit, and then made the few decisions they did make even more influential by being plucked randomly out without consistency. I would rather a consistent fair contest rather than them changing how they umpire the game in such a drastic fashion.

That 50m to white was a joke. The non free to Stanton was a joke. The sliding free to us was a joke. Etc.

Also: Looks like the final two spots in the eight are for WC, Carlton, Adelaide, Richmond and North to fight over. I have a big gap between the top 6 and the last two. Collingwood has a great fixture from here and should easily make it, as should we. The other four - Freo, Sydney, Hawks, Geelong - are the real contenders and should lock away the top four unless one of them falls in a heap / we get on a massive roll.

We are in an adjustment period. There has clearly been an instruction in the last few weeks to not focus on technical infringements of rules which is a massive change to the way almost every game has been umpired in the last decade (or it at least feels that long).

The umpiring was appalling if you're looking at consistency throughout the year but at least it is now fitting in with the spirit of how the game is played. There has been a little reverting to form but already there are more natural results when a whistle is blown. I'll take umpires missing free kicks before I'd taking them paying too many because of a focus on technical infringements which are not dangerous and which do not promote an unfair advantage.

They should use that game as the baseline.

Here is what we want to ignore; show the technical stuff,
Here is what we need to fix; show the Stanton, betts and sliding rule
This is the rule we want to start enforcing; holding the ball examples. Have to award the tackler.

This was the best umpirered game for the round, of you look at wce/saints game they tried then started paying crap. Just got to hold their nerve.

Only if the tackle prevents disposal or causes an illegal disposal and where was prior opportunity (such as when Judd got Zaharakis in the last).

My absolute pet #1 umpiring hate is when they reward someone being tackled for buckling at the knees and falling forward (having been tackled while upright), drawing an (incorrect) in-the-back judgement. Dempster on Priddis being a prime example. In that instance, the tackler should always be given preference.

I agree that the umpiring has been a lot better recently, because it hasn't really interfered with as many matches as usual (and it never, ever, ever, ever should), but am I the only one that thinks it's ridiculous that the umpiring has dramatically changed 10 weeks into a season?

How unprofessional is that?

It's not only a confirmation of failure without the decency to formally admit it, but it's ridiculous to suddenly change the entire philosophy and attitude of umpiring halfway through a season and (once again) expect players to just adapt.

It's no better than the sliding rule being brought in 4 weeks into 2012, or the hands in the back rule being forgotten about for a large part of 2012, only to reappear.

Be consistent for ****s sake.

Hasn't the changes in umpiring occurred in conjunction with the Giesch being away?

I think there is a lesson to be learnt there for the AFL. If things are moving back towards the way the game was intended to be umpired in The Giesch's absence, then....

Naah, it is to do with the change in Football Operations Manager which is the office from which these sorts of policy directives come.

Mark Evans, formerly of Hawthorn, was appointed to the position in an attempt to bridge the developing gulf between the AFL and the clubs/fans. We can only assume that he was either forthright about the gulf during his application for the job or the AFL was already concerned and made sure that new Football Operations Manager would be in form and substance, a man of the people (obviously they missed their chance to appoint Steve Alessio).

Evans even came out and shit canned the video review system. It looks like he is as good an appointment as everyone wanted him to be (although you'd have say in Adrian Anderson's favour, not that I like making the concession, that he was probably being dictated to by those higher up the food chain).

Was called out by Robbo last night for diving and let's be fair, that's pretty much what it is.

I can't see that anyone has commented about Hirdy getting a phone call from the Giesch to let him know how they'll be umpiring in the upcoming game. I find this a tad surprising.

Do you mean surprising that Giesch has done that, or that noone's mentioned it?

I didn't bother, because it still doesn't make it OK. The Giesch can suck my balls, and I'm glad that it looks like he'll be out of a job, the incompetent and dishonest bugger.

Well both really. Someone mentioned it on the North board. Couldn't see any mention on the MB. Thought opposition clubs would have a field day with it. Hird was under the impression the Giesch called all the coaches but Gerard Healy made mention OTC that he'd asked Brendan McCartney (was on 360 just before) and Brendan had said he'd never been called.

Seems like a really odd thing to do.

Giesch: G'day James. Just a quick courtesy call to let you know that the umpires have been instructed to only pay the really obvious ones this week.. kthxbai

It's going to take a while for umpires to calm down with their free kicks. They've been empowered to give away tiggy ones for so long that they're going to revert back to old habits sometimes and give away stupid HTB decisions or give free for high tackles involving blatant ducking. I hope they don't go too far the other way with it though. You don't want it to be as bad as the 90s where defenders like Silvagni did whatever the hell they wanted. Somewhere in between would be nice. If blatant pushing in the back comes back in I'll be pretty peeved.

They were alright FN. Jeffrey was hopeless, but the other two were alright. Stanton getting his head ripped off at the end of the third with no free pissed me off, but they were pretty good

I liked hearing that Carlton were robbed because of the non-goal to Garlett, yet the Stanton free (actually towards the end of the game) and the non-review-goal to Betts don't get a mention.

I have no idea what this means but I'm recording the game and am about to go watch it.

You'll be able to hear it, haha.

Classic stuff!
